We have chicks!

This evening around 5:00 my daughter Madelyn and I went to school to check on the eggs. Today is day 21 so we were hoping to see some eggs with cracks in them.  When we peeked in the incubator window my jaw dropped.  We had chicks!  Not just one or two…we had 11 chicks!  Some were very fluffy (meaning they had hatched early today and had time to dry).  Some still had sticky wet feathers which meant they were newly hatched.  One was in the process of hatching and I got a few pictures of the action. We set up a tank for the chicks with a heat lamp, food, water and bedding and moved 9 fluffy chicks there.  I cleaned out the egg shells and put down fresh paper towels for those still in the incubator.  There are 2 wet chicks that need to dry and newly hatched chick #12.  Unfortunately chick #12 has a bloody sack attached to its body which I believe is the rest of its yolk sack that was supposed to absorb.  Hopefully given time it will absorb and it’ll do just fine. There are only 2 eggs remaining.  One has no cracks at this time and the other has cracks facing down which means the chick may have tried to hatch but couldn’t get enough air.  We’ll see what happens tomorrow when we arrive at school!

When I went home there were 2 wet chicks still drying in the incubator and chick #12 who has a bloody yolk sac that hasn't yet absorbed. There were only 2 eggs left.
