Red Ribbon Week Spirit Days

This week we celebrated Red Ribbon Week at Brecknock as a way of reminding students to make healthy choices and say no to drugs.  The theme this year was “Life is your journey, travel drug free.”

Monday, 10/22- “Life is a journey,” for you and me.  We had Role Reversal day– students dressed like staff, and staff dressed like students.

Character Pumpkins

If you visit Brecknock in the next 2 weeks or have a moment on your way to or from your conference, be sure to pause a moment in the lobby and check out the showcase.  Students in each third grade language arts class created pumpkins to represent book characters. They read the book, wrote a character report, and then worked together to plan and create their pumpkin character. My class recorded our reports on Seesaw.  If you haven’t started following your child on Seesaw, check it out!

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

My Language Arts Class’s Recycling Program was featured in an article in the Lancaster LNP newspaper on Tuesday.  If you missed it, here’s what it said:

EASTERN LANCASTER COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT
Paper trail leads to Brecknock
Brecknock Elementary School third-graders turned recycling advocates are learning to care for the Earth as part of their language arts studies. They have learned what it means to reduce, reuse and recycle, according to a news release.
Students were disappointed to learn this year that paper is no longer recycled at Brecknock because there is no recycling truck to collect it, the release noted. So Brecknock started its own recycling program. Students learned that Mennonite Central Committee recycles paper and other items to raise funds to cover the costs of shipping relief kits worldwide. They saw an opportunity.
In a letter to Principal Kimberly Anderson, students explained their project and requested permission to get started. They wrote a letter to custodian Maureen Hogan, asking her for six recycling bins and boxes in which they could transport paper for recycling. They also crafted an email for teachers, letting them know about the paper recycling efforts.
Students prepared signs for the recycling bins so people would know what could, and could not be, recycled. Then, student groups prepared and practiced a recycling presentation that they gave in each third-grade homeroom.
Students plan to empty recycling bins weekly and deliver the paper to MCC. There is also a recycling center on a cart in third-grade teacher Julie Muhr’s classroom. After students sort out items that aren’t recyclable, Muhr will transport the filled boxes to MCC.
Other classes at Brecknock are interested in the program, which may soon mean more bins throughout the school.

Fire Prevention Day

Today the Bowmansville Fire Company and Fivepointville Ambulance Company came to Brecknock.  The kids were so excited to go in the smoke trailer.  The firefighters taught us about situations to watch out for in the kitchen like pot holders too close to the stove or what to do with a grease fire.  Next the students went upstairs in the trailer to the “bedroom” while the trailer filled with fake smoke.  They had to crawl down the stairs and outside.  The kids got to see first hand how staying low helps you stay out of the smoke.  The EMTs taught us about CPR and the equipment they use on scene.  We also got to see the inside of the ambulance.  Thank you to the visitors who came to school today to share this important safety information!

Field Trip

Today we got to enjoy our long awaited, rescheduled Agriculture Awareness Field Trip. Our students rotated through 10 stations to learn from the Garden Spot FFA and Agriculture students. We learned a lot and pet some really cute farm animals!
