Phonics practice

In Language Arts we spend a large portion of our morning learning how to read words using phonics skills. Mrs. Franks teaches two direct stations each day where students work on reading and writing words with the pattern for the week and read paper books that include those words.  The first three weeks of second grade were spent reviewing short vowel words (nap, beg, not). We are currently working on our second week reviewing that silent -e makes a long vowel sound in a word (make, like, rope).

The phonics program we are using this year utilizes some hand gestures for students. When students see a word with a silent -e they make this gesture.

Beginning readers are used to sounding out words from left to right. When you come across a silent -e word your eyes need to notice the e at the end of the word before you start sounding it out so you know to make the long vowel sound. This gesture helps students to notice the silent -e.

A few days a week students will bring home paper books that they highlighted and read with Mrs. Franks. On these nights the homework assignment is “Read paper book, log.” We expect students to reread this same paper book that night for homework to get additional practice with this week’s phonics skill.  It should be read out loud to an adult. You will see many highlighted words.

If your child gets stumped on a highlighted word you might encourage your second grader to use the hand gesture, make the long vowel sound for you, and then try sounding out the word. As the year goes on we will work on many different phonics skills that second grade readers need to master to become proficient readers.

Civics unit

We have been studying Civics as our first Social Studies unit of the year.  So far we’ve covered the following lessons. At this point your child should be able to answer these essential questions.  Please review it at home. All this information is on the study guide if you’d like to reference it.

What are ways you can be a good citizen?  We learned about being good citizens at home and at school. You can be a good citizen by following the rules, working hard and respecting and helping others.

Why do we need rules and laws?  We need rules and laws to protect the rights of citizens, keep them safe and to keep things running in an orderly way.

Why do we need to have a government? We need government to make and enforce laws.

Who are the leaders of our government?  The president leads the country. A governor leads a state. A mayor leads a town or city.

This week we will begin studying patriotic symbols. Stay tuned for a date for the Civics test. I’ll give at least 1 week’s notice.

Math class

Today second grade started switching classes for math. All second graders took the pretest for our Place Value unit.  Students were grouped to work with different teachers for this unit based on their learning needs for place value.  Some students go to Mrs. Swavely and Mrs. Henn’s classrooms during this time.  Other students come and join Mrs. Franks and I.  We co-teach a math class.

This year Brecknock is utilizing a Rotational teaching model.  Students rotate through stations while in Math class.  Both Mrs. Franks and I teach Direct Stations where we work with small groups of students practicing math skills for our current unit.  At the Independent Station students use their Chromebooks to access ST Math (also known as Jiji) or IXL.  At the Collaborate Station students work with either Mrs. Miller or Mrs. Haller to play math games that practice skills from our current unit.

Here are some pictures from our first day in math class:

Amelia Bedelia

This month I’ll be reading aloud books by Peggy and Herman Parish.  Peggy Parish wrote twelve books in the Amelia Bedelia series.  After she passed away her nephew began writing Amelia Bedelia books.  His latest editions even show Amelia Bedelia as a child.  Amelia Bedelia is famous for getting all mixed up.  Her literal mindedness comes from reading cookbooks where you must do exactly what it says.  Click here to access a fun website with Amelia Bedelia activities.

Back to School Night

I’m looking forward to meeting my students’ families at Back to School Night on Thursday, Sept. 8.  The evening begins at 6:00 with an informational gathering in the gym.  Then families can move from room to room as they visit and meet teachers.  You will have a chance to meet me as well as your child’s language arts and math teachers and any specials teachers as well. The evening ends at 7:30.  Hope to see you there!
