Relay for Life

On Friday Brecknock participated in the Relay for Life.  At 11:00 all students went out to the playground to greet the runners who carried the torch from Garden Spot High School all the way to Brecknock. Once the torch arrived, grades took turns walking or running around a track for their designated half hour. Thanks to all the kids who brought in coin to donate!

Chicks Adopted

Yesterday our chicks made their way to new homes.  3 students have adopted them.  We hope they will keep us updated with stories and pictures of how the chickens are growing and changing.  It has been great having the chicks in our classroom for the last 10 days.

Shape Monsters

We are in the midst of our Geometry math unit.  We have learned about 2D and 3D shapes and are beginning to discuss how to partition shapes into halves, thirds and fourths. Today at the Collaborative Station students made Shape Monsters with their partner(s).  They designed a monster and used shape patterns to create features.  They completed a paper that told how many of each shape was included in their monster.

Chick update- day 23

This morning when I arrived at school I was sad to see that chick #12 had passed away during the night. It was still in the incubator because it hadn’t dried off and seemed weak.  I guess not fully absorbing the yolk was fatal after all.  The 11 chicks we do have are as cute as ever and so fluffy!  They love to cuddle on top of each other and nap.  Today they got hungry and explored the water and food more. If you are interested in adopting chicks please return your signed permission slip by Thursday.

Chick update- day 22

Today when I arrived at school I moved two fluffy chicks from the incubator to the tank.  The chicks slept a lot today.  They like to huddle up and pile on one another under the heat lamp.

Chick #12 seems to be doing ok.  It’s yolk sac has shriveled up and looks like a large scab.  This chick spent the whole day in the incubator trying to dry off and fluff up but is still not ready to come out yet.  It’s feathers still look very wet. The two eggs that were remaining have not made any progress so I disposed of them after school.

Chick #12 still looked wet at 4:00 p.m.
