The Dollar Holler Rap

In math we are learning to count money.  Each day we review coins and their values.  This week Mrs. Ringler taught the class a “catchy” rap that we hope gets stuck in our students’ heads to help them easily recall the value of each coin.  Whenever we sing this rap we invite some “Coin Helpers” up front who get to proudly display the coins that we are singing about. Here are the words to our rap and some pictures from today:

My class knows a song.

It’s really kind of funny.

It’s all about coins,

and learning to count money.

Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters

Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters

Now a penny means one.

A nickel means five.

A dime is worth ten,

and a quarter’s twenty-five.

Measure Me

On Monday in Math class we did a fun activity called “Measure Me.”  The students had a chance to use measuring tapes to practice measuring parts of their bodies.  We measured around our heads, necks, ankles, wrists, and hips.  We measured leg length, arm length and arm span.  The kids had lots of fun working together to gather the measurements.

Measurement Gardens

We are currently working on a measurement unit.  At the Collaborative Station students worked together to create measurement gardens.  Each student made flowers and measured the stem and petals.  There are inch and centimeter flowers. Check out our gardens next time you are in our hallway.

Read Across America

Yesterday we celebrated Read Across America.  March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’s birthday.  To celebrate reading we had a special visitor. Blake, a Garden Spot High School student from the National Honor Society came to our classroom.  Blake read the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Afterwards each student got to glue shapes together to make their own caterpillar. The kids had fun with this activity.

February STAR Party

On Tuesday we celebrated excellent student behavior with our monthly Star party. Each day our Students are Taking Academic Responsibility by making good choices at school. They start the day with 4 stars and try to keep them all day or even earn an extra star for excellent behavior. Teachers kept track of student scores all month and averaged them to see who was invited to celebrate good behavior at our S.T.A.R. Party. Any student that averaged 3 stars or higher was invited to wear pajamas and slippers to school. Students who averaged 4 stars or higher were “Rock Stars” and were able to bring a stuffed animal to spend the day with them. At the end of the day our class had some time to meet each other’s stuffed animals and listen to some stories that Mrs. Ringler read. This month all students in our class were Stars or Rock Stars!  Yipee! Now we’ll begin working on making good behavior choices for March.

Book Buddies

This week we got to meet our Book Buddies.  Our class is paired with Mrs. O’Donnell’s 5th grade class.  We will get together once a month for the rest of the year to read books together.  On Monday they came to our class.  The big and little buddies got to know one another by filling out an interview paper.  Then they spent time reading books together.
