Today we started the Nutrition portion of our Health unit. Food group serving recommendations are now being shared with a visual known as My Plate rather than a food pyramid. Each day we are focusing our learning on a different food group. We will learn what foods are in that group, the recommended serving size for a 6-8 year old that gets a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise a day, and how these foods help our bodies. Students will also have the chance to taste foods from each food group. (A special thanks to the families that are sending in these foods!) You can check out www.choosemyplate.gov to find out more information and adult serving recommendations. You can also click here to see the study guide for this unit: Nutrition study guide
I will update this post each day with information and pictures about our learning so check back!
10/31 Fruit Group: We learned children should have 1 to 1/2 cups of fruit each day. Fruits help our bodies heal cuts and bruises. We tasted grapes and strawberries. Yum!
11/1 Vegetable Group: We learned children should have 1 1/2 cups of vegetables every day. Vegetables help our bodies grow, stay healthy, and see better. We tasted cauliflower!
11/3 Physical Activity: We learned that being healthy includes more than just eating healthy. It’s so important to be active every day. Children should try to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Each day for Health class we are doing a quick workout with Fresh Start Fitness from Go Noodle. We are learning some great exercise moves that kids can do during TV commercials or as breaks during video game playing. These few minutes of active time are just a start to being healthy.
Grain Group: We learned children should eat 5 ounces of grain foods each day. At least half of these should be whole grain foods. 1 ounce= a slice of bread or 1/2 a cup of cooked rice or pasta. Grain group foods give our bodies energy. We tasted whole grain crackers, popcorn and pretzels.
11/4 Protein Group: The protein group consists of meat, nuts, dried beans and eggs. We learned children should eat 4 ounces of protein each day. Protein group foods help us build muscle. We tasted ham and turkey.
11/7 Dairy Group: The dairy group contains food that are made from milk. These foods help us build strong bones and teeth. It is recommended that children eat or drink 2 1/2 cups of dairy foods each day. We tasted cheese sticks and loved them! (Sorry, I forgot to take pictures.)
