December S.T.A.R. Party

Today we celebrated excellent student behavior with our monthly Star party. Each day our Students are Taking Academic Responsibility by making good choices at school. They start the day with 4 stars and try to keep them all day or even earn an extra star for excellent behavior. Teachers kept track of student scores all month and averaged them to see who was invited to celebrate good behavior at our S.T.A.R. Party. Any student that averaged 3 stars or higher was invited to watch a fun Christmas movie. Students who averaged 4 stars or higher were “Rock Stars” and got a candy cane to enjoy during the party.  Now we’ll begin working on making good behavior choices for January.

Golden Circuit Board

IMG_3307

Today our homeroom class earned the Golden Circuit Board for S.T.E.M. class (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). That means last week our class stood out as the class that did the best out of all classes at Brecknock with being respectful, responsible and safe when we attended S.T.E.M.  Last week’s focus was on the hour of code.  Students got to get a try at doing computer coding and really enjoyed it.  Let’s keep up the good work!

Solar System Songs

We are learning the planets (in order from the sun).  Here are some songs to sing about the planets.

The Planet Song (tune: The Ants Go Marching)

The planets revolve around the sun.

Hoorah, hoorah!

The planets revolve around the sun.

Hoorah, hoorah!

The planets revolve around the sun,

Spin on their axis every one.

And they all go spinning,

Around and around they go!

Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars,

Hoorah, hoorah!

Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars,

Hoorah, hoorah!

Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars,

All whirling and twirling around their star.

And they all go spinning,

Around and around they go.

Jupiter, Saturn are really great!

Hoorah, hoorah!

Jupiter, Saturn are really great!

Hoorah, hoorah!

Jupiter, Saturn are really great.

Uranus and Neptune will make eight.

And they all go spinning.

Around and around they go.

The Family of the Sun (tune: Farmer in the Dell)

The family of the sun, the family of the sun,

Eight planets all in all, the family of the sun.

Mercury is hot, and Mercury is small.

Mercury has no atmosphere, it’s just a rocky ball.

Venus has thick clouds, that hide what is below.

The air is foul, the ground is hot, it rotates very slow.

We love the Earth, our home; its oceans and its trees.

We eat its food, we breathe its air, so no pollution please.

Mars is very red.  It’s also dry and cold.

Someday you might visit Mars if you are really bold.

Great Jupiter is big.  We’ve studied it a lot.

We found that it has 16 moons, and a big red spot.

Saturn has great rings. We wondered what they were.

Now we know they’re icy rocks which we saw as a blur.

Uranus is faint, and Neptune’s light is weak.

But soon enough the Voyager will give us all a peek.

Mad Libs

mad libs

We have been learning about nouns, plural nouns and verbs this year.  Today my reading groups reviewed these word categories using Mad Libs.  None of the students were familiar with Mad Libs but had so much fun!  First we generated a list of nouns, plural nouns, verbs and adjectives on the board.  Then we worked together to fill in the blanks on a Christmas themed Mad Lib story.  When we read the finished story together there was tons of laughter and smiles.  If you are looking for a quick stocking stuffer or last minute Christmas gift, consider a Mad Libs notebook for your second grader!

Peacock Measurement Project

We just completed a math unit on Measurement.  Our math class had a fun final project to complete with their group at the Collaborative Station.  Their assignment was to create a peacock.  Each student had to make 2 colors of the same color and record their exact measurement (in inches or centimeters) on a recording sheet.  Groups measured and assembled their peacocks on the first day and then got to decorate them with glitter, sequins and googly eyes on the next day.  The peacocks turned out great and are hanging in the hall for all to see.
