Genius Hour Presentations- October

Students have been hard at work exploring a topic of their choice during Genius Hour and preparing a project to present their learning.  Today five students from our class presented their projects. We’ll keep working on our research and will have more projects to present next month.

Micah’s project- Are UFO’s real?
Delia’s project- What is the best way to care for a puppy?
Mya’s project- How fast can wolves run?
Faith’s project- Can I cook a delicious breakfast for my family?
Trey’s project- Can I cook dinner for my family?

Character Pumpkins

If you visit Brecknock in the next 2 weeks or have a moment on your way to or from your conference, be sure to pause a moment in the lobby and check out the showcase.  Students in each third grade language arts class created pumpkins to represent book characters. They read the book, wrote a character report, and then worked together to plan and create their pumpkin character. My class is recording our reports on Seesaw.  If you haven’t started following your child on Seesaw, check it out!

Fire Prevention Day

Yesterday the Bowmansville Fire Company and Fivepointville Ambulance Company came to Brecknock.  The kids were so excited to go in the smoke trailer.  The firefighters taught us about situations to watch out for in the kitchen like pot holders too close to the stove or what to do with a grease fire.  Next the students went upstairs in the trailer to the “bedroom” while the trailer filled with fake smoke.  They had to crawl down the stairs and outside.  The kids got to see first hand how staying low helps you stay out of the smoke.  The EMTs taught us about CPR and the equipment they use on scene.  We also got to see the inside of the ambulance.  Thank you to the visitors who came to school today to share this important safety information!

Another Matter Experiment

This week we experimented with adding heat to solids to see if they change their state of matter.  We used a double boiler to add heat to an ice cube, a gummy, and some chocolate.  All three solids changed to liquid.  Then we melted some more chocolate and put it in pumpkin shaped molds.  We removed the chocolate from the heat and the chocolate returned to a solid state for us to enjoy. Yum!

Matter experiment

During this week’s inquiry lessons we are exploring how states of matter can change if you add or remove heat.  Yesterday we predicted what would happen if we put liquid (water and grape juice) in the fridge and freezer.  Today we observed and recorded our results.

The water in the fridge was liquid with a block of floating ice. The juice remained liquid. Both measured 34 degrees Fahrenheit.
Both the water and juice in the freezer had changed to a solid.

We predicted that the liquid in the freezer would change to a solid, so we poured juice into dixie cups with popsicle sticks in the hopes of making popsicles. We were excited to eat our results!
