Kendra Halpin – Emergency Medical Internship

This Fall, I am participating in an internship with the New Holland Ambulance Association located in New Holland PA. I go to the station twice a week from 8:30-12:00 am. When at the station, I have to opportunity to observe and help with many different duties such as going on calls, team bonding, and daily duties around the station.

Working in the EMS industry can be very exciting. Each day brings a new set of goals and tasks. We come into the job not expecting the same thing to happen each day because we must be prepared for anything to come upon us. There have been many days where we don’t get a call and we simply do other tasks around the station like office work or washing the rigs. Our team enjoys going to local diners and restaurants for breakfast each morning together. This is a nice way for us to prepare for the day ahead of us and spend time together outside of the station. However, this time can, at any moment, be interrupted by our job duties.

I have really loved being able to work with the New Holland EMS and am looking forward to what comes with them. Being here for this short amount of time has shown me how being prepared for any scenario is very important. Being able to adapt to a situation as it goes on is a good skill to have not only in this job but also in life. Having this internship has helped me be more prepared. Being part of such a fast-paced and unexpected job has taught me that it is important to learn and grow as time goes on.

The New Holland EMS station is a great atmosphere for me, and I have cherished every moment. I hope to enroll in the upcoming EMT course this January to move forward to becoming a certified EMT. Being around the unpredictable has opened my eyes and helped me to see what my future is in life. I would love to continue being a part of this team even after my internship ends in June.
