Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Adam Martin – Maintenance Co-Op

My name is Adam Martin and I am enrolled in the co-op program at Garden Spot High School. Co-op allows me to leave school after the first block to go to work for the rest of the day. I thought this program would be beneficial for me because I only needed three classes to graduate, and I didn’t want to take random classes that I don’t want to take.

The job I work at is Weavers Toasted Grains in New Holland. I do various maintenance tasks and projects. I unload a lot of grain trucks and sweep up the spilled grain. I make a lot of metal patches for augers, legs, and drags. I get the opportunity to do some electrical work and maintain some equipment. I also work on the trucks

The variation of work I was able to do really helped me see what kind of work I do, and do not like. I learned a lot of new skills with this job that I will be able to use throughout my whole life. I discovered that I really enjoy working on the semis, skid loaders, forklifts, and anything else, my plan for after high school is to go into mechanics.

This class was very useful to me. I got a lot of work experience that I wouldn’t have gotten if I didn’t take this class. That helped me to find what I am interested in and to give me an idea of what I want to do for the rest of my life. I would recommend doing co-op to anyone who wants to work and does not need that many school credits.
