Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Aj Martin – Construction Co-Op

My name is AJ Martin and I am enrolled in the co-op program at Garden Spot High School. Because I am in this program I am able to leave school after block two to go to work the rest of the day. I thought this program would be beneficial for me because I only needed two classes to graduate, and I didn’t want to take random classes that I don’t need.

The job I work at is Weavers Toasted Grains in New Holland, PA. I do various maintenance tasks and projects. I unload a lot of grain trucks and sweep up spilled grain. I also make a lot of metal patches and pieces for equipment. I also got the opportunity to do some electrical work.

The variation of work I was able to do really helped me see what kind of work I do, and do not like. I learned a lot of new skills with this job, that I will be able to use throughout my whole life. I discovered that I really enjoy building things and fixing things, so the plan is for me to start working with a residential construction crew after I can go to work full time.

This class was very useful to me. I got a lot more work experience than I would have if I would not have done this class. That helped me to find what I am most interested in and to give me an idea of what I want to do for the rest of my life. I would recommend doing co-op to anyone who wants to work and does not need many school credits.
