Safety Information

School safety continues to be an important topic. We held our lock-down with state police, district officials, New Holland Police, and
East Earl Police all in attendance. They walked through the building during the lock-down and gave us feedback regarding procedures in place. We are continuing to teach and practice safety procedures with all our students. We will hold additional lock-down drills this school year. This month, we will participate with schools all across the state in a severe weather drill.

Additionally, we are asking that you send in a dated note when your child is not following normal dismissal procedures, i.e. car rider,
picking up early for an appointment. Please include the full name of the individual who will be picking up your child. If we do not receive a note, your child will be expected to follow his/her normal routine. We understand that sometimes plans change at the last minute so if you need to pick up your child and did not know before school, please call the office no later than 2:45. It can get very busy at the end of the day and we want to ensure that we have notified your child and his/her teacher of the change in a timely manner.

You will also note that we have changed entry procedures. Currently, the district procedure is for you to enter the main school doors and
then buzz-in at the office. Please do not enter the building with your child through the parent drop-off doors. If you need to come in with your child, you need to enter through the office, sign-in and receive a visitor/volunteer pass. We appreciate your involvement at school.

Cold Weather and Recess

This is the time of year when there are often questions about indoor/outdoor recess procedures. It is expected that students come to  school dressed appropriately for the cold weather. Each day, we review the “feels like” temperature and if the “feels like” temperature is too cold, we  will have indoor recess. If the feels like temperature is appropriate, then we will send the students outside for recess. Please make sure that your children come to school with warm outdoor weather clothing!

PSSA English Language Arts Field Test

During February, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 across Pennsylvania will be participating in a field test of items for a new version of the
Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). In the past, the PSSA Writing test has only been given to students in grades 5, 8, and 11. In 2014, The PSSA test will reflect the Common Core Standards which will combine Reading and Writing into one English Language Arts (ELA) test. The purpose of this Writing Field Test is to validate new questions for next year’s ELA PSSA. We will not receive back individual or school score reports from this test. Our students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be taking the assessment on the morning of February 12th. Please help your child prepare for this day by getting plenty of rest and eating a healthy breakfast the morning of the test. We also request that you stress the importance of your child doing his or her best on this assessment. If you have any questions or would like to review the assessment, please contact the school.

Welcome, November! Some reminders…

Dads and Donuts is scheduled for Friday, November 16. RSVPs (one per family) are due by Wednesday, November 7.

Parent-teacher conference forms were sent home last week. Please return ASAP! You will then receive confirmation of your child’s assigned conference date/time. Conferences will be held Monday, November 19, and Tuesday, November 20.

Reminders about educational travel days:

The School District recognizes that from time to time students may have the opportunity to participate in pre-planned trips and educational experiences during the regular school year.

Upon receipt of a prior written request from the parents or guardians of the pupils involved, pupils may be excused from school attendance to participate in educational tours or trips, when such trip is so evaluated by the Superintendent or designee.  Pupil participants therein are subject to direction and supervision by school approved adult persons.

The determination of each request will be made on the following:  prior attendance records, previous requests and frequency of such requests and the educational value of the requested experience.

This form should be submitted one week prior to the date of departure.  It is to be understood by each student and parent that class work missed during the period of absence will be made up.  Students will generally be limited to one week of educational travel.  A separate form should be signed for each child with the Eastern Lancaster County Schools.

A link to the district’s educational travel form can be found to the right under “Links for You.” You can download the form as needed.

Our fall Book Fair will be held November 13-20. Specific times for each day can be found on the school calendar on the website here.
