North Museum Field Trip

We had a fun field trip on Friday to the North Museum.  Our tour guide took us to all 6 sections of the museum.  He introduced us to that location and gave us the opportunity to explore.  Then we saw a Magic School Bus Space movie in the Science Dome.  After lunch, groups got to go back to their favorite sections of the museum with their chaperones. Here are some pictures of the day.  Ask your third grader to fill in the captions!

Recycling Visitor

On Wednesday, April 3rd, our Language Arts class had a visitor.  Mrs. Joyce Snader, a community member, read the article I wrote about our class’s recycling efforts in the “Elanco Extra.” She was so impressed by what our students were doing that she wrote me a letter.  I invited her to come and meet our class so she could share her passion of recycling with us. How exciting for our students to realize that people from the community were aware of the recycling we do each week!  Mrs. Snader shared some ideas with us on how to reuse items.  She also introduced us to some other community resources that your family might be interested in.

Art of Recycle– This business is located in Ephrata at 27 Coister Ave.  It is a “thrifty craft store” for you to visit to make items out of recycled objects.  They take donations! Visit their website at www.artofrecycle.org

Lancaster Creative Reuse– Located at 1865 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, PA.  This is a donation based art, craft, and sewing supply store.  Check them out at www.lancastercreativereuse.org

March STAR Party

On Friday, 3/29,  we celebrated excellent student behavior with our monthly Star party. Each day our Students are Taking Academic Responsibility by making good choices at school. They start the day with 4 stars and try to keep them all day or even earn an extra star for excellent behavior. Teachers kept track of student scores all month and averaged them to see who was invited to celebrate good behavior at our S.T.A.R. Party. Any student that averaged 3.5  stars or higher was invited to make Candy Catapults! Students who averaged 4 stars or higher were “Rock Stars” and were given bags of Easter candy to enjoy.  After working together with a group to construct their catapult, each group was given the chance to launch 3 jellybeans toward our point containers.  The group who earned the highest points won candy prizes as well.  Now we’ll begin working on making good behavior choices for April!

Here is the direction page in case you’d like to build a catapult at home.

Weather Performance Task

Recently we wrapped up our learning for Language Arts Module 4.  We studied aspects of the weather and had the task of educating our school community about the weather and how to prepare as well as safety procedures.  Each day we had a student weather reporter who prepared and practiced a weather report to share the high and low temperature, wind speed, precipitation and sky conditions.  The reporter read the report to our class and then updated a weather map and temperature chart. If you follow your child’s Seesaw account, you can watch the video of their weather report.

Reading groups also read books which focused on a specific type of severe weather. They created a poster to share safety precautions with our school.  These posters were shared with our class and are hanging in the hallway near the bathrooms so all Brecknock students and adults can be warned about severe weather.

The Green Group learned about blizzards.
Red group learned about lightning.
Blue group learned about tornadoes.
