Book Character Dress-Up Day

Monday, March 3rd, is Dr. Seusss’ Read Across America Day.  This year 2nd grade would like to celebrate by having Book Character Dress-up Day.  Your child can participate by dressing up like a favorite book character.  Please have your child bring a book with that character in to share that day.  If your child has a certain character or costume in mind, he/she can look for a library book with that caracter during our next library visit.  This is a great way for students to show their love of reading and books.

* Remember your child is wearing the costume all day, make sure it is comfortable and not cumbersome.

* No face paint.

* No pretend weapons.

A guest speaker

Today we had a guest speaker from Garden Spot High School.  Misty Matesig is a former Brecknock student who is now in 9th grade.  She is working to earn a scholarship which requires her to do a presentation for students.  Misty’s topic was “Animals Have Feelings.”  She taught about how to treat animals (pets and wild) with respect.  She taught how to approach an animal that you’d like to pet and use A.S.P. (A- Ask for permission to pet it.    S- Let the animal sniff your closed fist.   P- Pet it gently.)  She brought her pet mice which she adopted from an animal shelter.  She even had some coloring packets and rubber duck/dogs for the students.  The class really seemed to enjoy all that she shared.

Misty was in Mrs. Muhr's second grade class in 2006-2007. She is in the middle row, second from the right.

Every student got to practice the A.S.P. steps and pet Misty's giant stuffed dog.

We got an upclose peek at Misty's pet mice.

Thanks for the rubber duck/dogs!

Valentine and Marble Party fun

This week we have had two fun days that we had to postpone because of last week’s snow.  On Tuesday we exchanged Valentines and enjoyed some delicious snacks.  On Wednesday we wore our pajamas, drank hot chocolate, and visited with our favorite stuffed animals as a reward for filling up our marble jar.

Valentine’s Day and Marble Party Postponed

This giant snow and two days off of school has put a wrinkle in our schedule.  The “update” I sent home last Wednesday outlined these changes but I thought I’d post them as well.

Valentine Exchange- We are postponing our Valentine Exchange until Tuesday 2/18.  If you volunteered to send in supplies for our party you may send them on Monday or Tuesday.

Pajama Day/Hot Chocolate Party- This party is postponed until Wednesday 2/19.  Students may wear pajamas, bring slippers to change in to , and bring a stuffed animal friend.

100th Day of School

On Tuesday we celebrated the 100th day of school.  This was a bit later than we predicted it would be because of all our snow days this year! During math time we sang a song about the 100th day, listened to a story, and did 3 activities with partners/groups.  Students first played a number grid game where they rolled a die and colored numbers to get to 100.  The first one there was the winner.  Next students had the option to flip a coin 100 times or roll a die 100 times and keep track of the results with tally marks.

Hot Chocolate-Pajama-Stuffed Animal Party

Our class has worked very hard to fill up a jar with marbles for the 2nd time this year!  Each marble was earned for excellent behavior (getting supplies out quickly and quietly, entire table working diligently and quietly, compliments from substitutes or specials teachers, students keeping their “good behavior” tickets all day.)  As a reward, the students have voted to have a Hot Chocolate-Pajama-Stuffed Animal Party.

On Thursday, 2/13 students in our class are allowed to wear their pajamas to school, bring slippers to change into, and bring a stuffed animal friend.  We will enjoy hot chocolate while socializing with friends as a reward.  Now we can start again to try and fill the marble jar to the top!

Brush, Brush, Smile!

On Friday all of second grade received a dental health lesson from the Brush, Brush, Bus organization.  Students learned tips about what types of foods are good to eat for healthy teeth, proper brushing and flossing technique, and what happens at the dental office.  Your child should have brought home a bag filled with goodies–a toothbrush, toothpaste, flossers, a timer (for 2 minutes of brushing time) and an activity book.  There is a chart in the back of the activity book for students to track their brushing and flossing if you are interested.
