In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald never actually told the reader what Gatsby’s ethnicity is. The author of the article is an English teacher and he has many students of different descents. The author says most people assume that the main character of classic novels are white and it can make it hard to relate for people of color. However, in this book, one can make the assumption that Gatsby could be of any race and they can therefore feel more of a connection with the other characters.

Opinion: I think that this article was pretty bad since the book implicitly shows that Gatsby is white. I don’t think that people of different ethnicities really care about the race of the main character in classic novels. Honestly, they would be more concerned with reading the book than relating to any of the characters in a book written a long time ago.

  1. Does the ethnicity of any main characters in media influence minorities?
  2. What are considered role models to people of color?
