Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Tyler Martin – Elementary Physical Education Internship

My name is Tyler Martin, and I am a senior at Garden Spot Highschool. During this fall semester, I was blessed with the opportunity to intern at Brecknock Elementary as a Phys-ed teacher! Through my experience at Brecknock, I was extremely blessed to have an amazing mentor to guide me through the way. I have always enjoyed working with kids, whether it was at my church, in school, or in camps over the summer. For my passion for kids and fitness, it is neat to be a role model to young kids at Brecknock Elementary school!

My mentor, Stacey Jackson, has been such a blessing to me through my experience. I gained a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience from her. Stacey has been in the education field for many years and is great at what she does. Stacey is a huge impact in my decision to pursue in physical education! I learned many ways to build relationships with the students. Whether it was putting a smile on their face while playing games with them, making handshakes, teaching them sports, and most of all being a light to the students!

The internship comes with a variety of duties and tasks that I need to complete. At the start of each class, I always help the students with their warmup and making sure they have proper form. I always have a positive attitude towards the class by connecting with the students. Occasionally, Stacey will let me grade the students on the day with their participation, respect, and enthusiasm. I attend my internship 3 days a week, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. I always look forward to those 3 days of the week to be with the students!

As I got more comfortable with the students and watched how Stacey lead the class. I began to take on a challenge for the day. I got to lead to whole afternoon with the class and Stace observed! I was blessed to lead 3 classes during the football unit! During the day, I helped with the warmup, lead them through football skills stations, and gave them a grade for the day! I was so honored that Stacey trusted me with the day and gave me the opportunity!

Overall, this internship made me more confident to pursue health and physical education in my future career. I give most of my thanks to Stacey Jackson for guiding me through the internship and giving me the best advice. Brecknock elementary has been a great school for me to explore and gain knowledge of the career of a Phys-ed teacher. I am excited to see where the rest of my time at Breakneck Elementary takes me, and I am so grateful for everyone who made this internship possible.
