This year we have decided to do a joint second grade end of year celebration. Each class broke into teams to plan different aspects of our end of year celebration. Mrs. Nelson’s class chose the lunch menu for the day, Mrs. Swavely’s class chose the crafts for the day, and our class chose the games for the day.

Our class will be sponsoring a six year old boy for Christmas.  You may wish to purchase something for him that you think a six year old would enjoy.  We also have a wish list of some items he needs and would like for Christmas. Please send all items into school unwrapped.

I plan to update my blog daily with gifts that have been purchased for our child. You can also look for updates in our homework folders on Fridays. If you would like to purchase a specific item off the list, feel free to send me a quick note to check if someone else has already purchased it.  If no one has then I will reserve that item for you, if you desire.

As you know, we have currently been talking about addition with and without regrouping in math class. This is a fun song that we made to help students remember how to add two numbers with and without regrouping. Make sure that your child shows you the hand motions that go with it!  (I apologize in advance for it getting stuck in your head! :P)

Grandparents’ Day is Sunday, September 11^th.  Our class would like to celebrate this special day by inviting our grandparents to join us for a special “tea” in the classroom.

Where: Mrs. Henn’s room, 107

When: Monday, September 10^th

Time: 9:30am – 10:30am

Grandparents will be invited to tour the classroom, listen to a story, help their grandchild with a craft, and enjoy some light refreshments. This is a great day to celebrate grandparents* and all the wonderful things they do!

*If your child does not have grandparents to invite, or any that live close by, they may invite another family member/friend from that generation.  Sorry parents! We’ll invite you in another time!

I cannot believe it is already time for back to school shopping! School will be starting before we know it!

You will be receiving a back to school letter in the mail sometime in the next few weeks, but I figured some of you may be curious about the items you will need now.

The second grade teachers supply everything that your child will need. I have purchased a pencil pouch for each student and already filled it with 2 pencils, crayons, a glue stick, an eraser, a whiteboard marker and eraser, and a bookmark. We will supply all of the folders that your child will need.

Your child may bring:
-pencils (they go through them so quickly!)
-erasers (same as above)
-a handheld pencil sharpener
-their own crayons, colored pencils or markers
-scissors
-Earbuds- Each child will have a Chromebook that they will use daily. We recommend sending in a pair of earbuds that your child can use. If they do not have earbuds, they will use the school’s headphones. Your child can store his/her earbuds in his/her pencil pouch.

Each summer, our amazing librarians at Brecknock plan fun, educational nights in the library. Join Mrs. Means, Mrs. High, and some of the other specialists for a fun night of reading and activities. Summer library is a drop in event from 6:00-8:00pm.  Students are able to check out up to 5 books!

Tuesday, July 31– Harry Potter’s Birthday Celebration

I cannot believe that another year has come to a close. It has been an amazing year and I am so thankful I got to share it with such remarkable kids. Although I am ready to spend the summer with Addison, Christopher, and Lorelei, I am going to miss each and every student I had the pleasure of working with this year. We had so much fun learning and growing this year and I know that each of them will do a fantastic job in third grade.

Here is just a quick glance at some of the fun we had this year. Even in such a short snippet of our year, the amazing personalities of the kiddos shine through. I am so honored to have had the chance to work with your child as they continue their educational journey.

Some of you may have heard of the summer reading slide while that may be a completely new term for some of you. The summer reading slide is the idea that students that do not continue to practice reading or math facts tend to lose about two months worth of instruction. However, there are many ways we try to combat this issue. Students will be coming home with a summer folder that details more information on the summer slide as well as some activities that they can complete.

Dear Families,

The students have been hard at work planning our End of the Year Celebration for Friday, June 8^th! The students separated into committees to make decisions on the activities and refreshments for our party.

One of the crafts that our craft committee chose is tie-dyed shirts! If you could please send in some sort of white clothing for your child to tie-dye, I would greatly appreciate it. (shirt, socks…etc.) Please have the clothing items in by Tuesday, June 5^th, and make sure that they are clearly labeled with your child’s name or initials. I will do the necessary preparations for the clothing items so they will be ready for the tie-dye process. If you cannot make it to the store, I will pick up some extra shirts that students can use.

Our craft committee also chose to make Lava Lamps. This is a fun and easy experiment. However, we will need 22 empty water bottles for this project. If you have any empty 16 ounce water bottles, please send them in.

Our games committee chose Drip, Drip, Splash and Minute to Win It games. I will provide the necessary materials for both of the games.
