Back to School 2013
Brecknock Elementary has been a busy place with all of the construction going on, new furniture being delivered, and teachers getting ready in our classrooms. We are all excited to get started again and for the opportunity to work with your children.
At this time we do not have a sink in our classroom so please send a water bottle (with a pop-top lid) with your child to school. They will be sent home each night to be refilled.
Enjoy these last few days of summer!

P.S. There is new playground equipment which I know the children will be excited to use.
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss’ birthday a few weeks ago was great fun! The children enjoyed listening to stories, reading stories, learning about Dr. Seuss and why he loved writing books for kids. Everyone especially enjoyed one of our Garden Spot High School students coming to read to them. Birthday cake was just an added bonus.

Impromptu Class Play
The children loved making masks and learning lines to put on an impromptu class play based on our anthology story Where Are All My Animal Friends? The children made their masks all by themselves and were very proud of them. We even invited Miss Martin’s first grade class to view a second run of the play. Great fun was had by all!!!

Thanksgiving Fun!
Our Thanksgiving celebration was a lot of fun. The children enjoyed making vests, headbands, and tablecloths. Our contribution was dessert. We had a great time making pies with the help of our wonderful volunteers a few days ahead of time. The children all enjoyed the turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing balls, corn muffins, and pumpkin or apple pie. They did a great job sharing what they are thankful for. Many of them mentioned how they were thankful for their families. Please click below to enjoy some pictures.

Picture Day
You could feel the excitement in the air in our class today. The children LOVE getting their pictures taken! They were buzzing about which background they had chosen. Picture Day to take a look at our wonderful students all ready for picture day.
Spirit Week
Thank you for helping your child participate in Spirit Week. Role reversal day was great. The children loved their “grown up” outfits. On Sports day, they were proud of the team they were representing. Mismatch day is just funny. Spirit Week slideshow

We have been working on counting by 5’s in math. Click the links to listen to and practice a Counting by 5’s song. Here’s another fun song to help your child practice Counting by 5’s. Happy counting!!!
PS – We have just started working on high frequency words
Working together in First Grade
It has been wonderful to work with and get to know your children. I’ve enjoyed hearing about their summer adventures and learning about their interests. We’ve been busy reviewing letters and sounds, reading stories together, and learning new math games.

Welcome Back
I’ve been in our classroom busily getting ready for our first day of school. I’m excited to see you again and look forward to hearing about your summer and beginning our school year together. Don’t forget to bring in something special to share with our class to help us get to know you better. You will have a chance to share one day during the first week of school.
Have a great weekend!
