Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Thomas Watt – Accounting Internship

Hello, my name is Thomas Watt. I am a senior at Garden Spot High School and I have the privilege to participate in the internship program here at the high school. I have spent the last few months of my second semester working in the finance and accounting department of Garden Spot Communities. I am learning from all members of the financial, accounting, and billing departments, including the CFO.

I have worked on several different projects during my time at the internship. These projects have ranged from organizing paperwork to helping out during the budgeting process for the next fiscal period by entering data on spreadsheets. The largest project I worked on was creating and mailing tax rebate letters to all the residents at Garden Spot Communities. I worked on this project for several weeks from January through February. Even though I have spent dozens of hours on the tax rebate letters, it was my favorite project I have worked on. This was my favorite because I saw my project immediately benefit the residents of Garden Spot Communities.

This internship has benefitted me as a student and a person in more ways than one. My internship is teaching what an office workplace looks like and how it flows. I can see the importance of a college education and how to properly interact with coworkers who work in the same department. With this internship, I have seen how money flows through a non-profit organization like GSC. Every day I am gaining real-world experience that will carry with me into whatever career I will have in the future.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in finance and accounting at Garden Spot Communities. This internship has greatly encouraged me to pursue a career in finance and accounting. I plan on earning a degree in both of these fields during my time in college. I would like to thank all of my mentors at Garden Spot because they have all benefited me tremendously during my time as an intern
