Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Madison Gehr – Music Education Internship

Hello! My name is Madison Gehr. I am a Garden Spot High School senior and am heavily involved in their music program! I am a part of the marching band, concert band, jazz band, vocal ensemble, chorus, and the GSPA pit, and I often play percussion with the orchestra! I love music and instruments and have committed to West Chester University to pursue my passion for music education! My internship is currently at New Holland Elementary School! I spend the first half of my day at the elementary school and help them learn different aspects of music!

The classes that I have helped to teach range anywhere from kindergarten up to 6th grade! I get to help interact with students from all over the school! We have worked on tons of different projects! Including rap projects, ukulele projects, and even doing a battle of the bands! These projects have helped me gain a better understanding of what elementary school music classes learn throughout the year!

Along with working with the students I have gained the great pleasure of being able to do a ton of work behind the scenes! Laminating paper, cutting things out, and helping to prepare for a concert in April! The second graders are doing a jungle-themed concert, so to help prepare I was able to cut out animal crowns for them all! It took tons of my time and effort, but regardless I am beyond excited to see them wear them for the performances!

This internship has opened my eyes when it comes to music education. I had no idea about elementary and all that it taught, so being able to watch, help, and observe was an amazing thing to be able to do to prepare myself for my future! I do still plan on pursuing a high school education, but I would never be upset with teaching elementary school! It was such an amazing experience, and I wouldn’t change it for the world!
