Matthew Sauder – Engineering Internship

My name is Matthew Sauder. I am interning at Case New Holland, which has been fantastic so far. I do not have many job duties mainly because I am there to learn, and do not have the knowledge to actually have a job there. I do not have much of a daily routine, as my mentor has focused on me having a lot of different engineering experiences. However, I do generally have time at the beginning and end of the internship to read about different materials CNH uses. I have only had one project so far because I have had to learn a lot about the specific software used at CNH.

I have finished one project at this point, and that was changing a decal on current and future combines. It was a long process because of the bureaucracy in CNH, although it is worth it because it is better to be slow than to do it quickly and have to redo the entire thing. I have gained a lot of experience in different parts of engineering, specifically I have used a lot of creo, which is the CAD program used at CNH. Also, I have learned a lot about materials used at Case. I have gained valuable information about why different materials are used, and general vocabulary that will be useful in my future career.

I have grown a lot from this internship. It has taught me valuable skills for any career. For example, I learned how to properly communicate with coworkers in a professional and effective way. That is something that will be useful no matter what kind of career I end up in. I have also learned the importance of being willing to learn, as going there with an open mind keeps everything I do exciting and prevents me from seeing it as another “class.” That is something I will have to keep in mind going into engineering, as there will be a lot of times where I won’t have the answers, and I will have to keep an open mind. Honestly, my internship has not changed my career goals that much, as I still want to be an aerospace engineer, really the only thing it has done is confirmed that engineering is what I want to do.

Having an internship at Case New Holland has provided me with an incredible experience. It has taught me a lot about engineering, and I know there is plenty more ahead for me to learn. I have gained experience I am very grateful to have, and this has given me a great look into what engineering is really like. I am glad I did this internship and am beyond grateful for the opportunity it has provided me.
