Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Kasey Miller – Accounting & Finance Internship

Hello, my name is Kasey Miller and I am currently a senior at Garden Spot High School. I am thankful enough to say that I have been interning at Garden Spot Village in the finance department for the first semester of my senior year. Garden Spot Village is a nonprofit faith-based retirement community mainly located in New Holland, PA with sister locations throughout Lancaster. I have learned so much about the day-to-day activities of an employee in the field I wish to pursue. Working alongside my mentors Nate Weber, CFO, Deb Bartow, Finance Controller, Heather Mellinger, Accounts Payables Supervisor and Payroll Manager, Ginger Beiler, Medicaid Coordinator, Christine Smith, Medicare Coordinator, and Kathy Upton, Billing Coordinator, I’ve learned a lot about how to run a successful business.

I have been a part of lots of important activities while here at Garden Spot Village. I have entered ancillary reports, filed medicare statements, counted and entered deposits, prepared invoices for validation, entered resident information into their system, helped in check runs, entered employee hours, and done many projects to determine the future of Garden Spot Village. I was able to participate in small parts of each employee’s daily activities, which really gave me a good understanding of how this business works. I was able to see how important each and every person’s job is when it comes to running a successful business. I have also sat in on many meetings both with residents and department heads. Everyone here was always so helpful when I had questions and was always willing to give me something to do, even when it might be challenging at first. They recognized my strengths and provided me with more opportunities for more complex projects as time progressed.

Even though I took accounting and many math classes here at the high school, this experience was so much different. An internship provided me with so much information that a classroom setting can’t teach you. I highly recommend looking into getting an internship because of all the important things it can teach you. This experience has taught me how to work together as a team with your co-workers to achieve a common goal of success. You can’t do it on your own, so good work ethics and teamwork are really important. This internship has set me above the rest. It’s a great thing to see on a resume or college application. Employers and others can see that I have a perspective that most students don’t get to see. I have experienced the workplace and got a feel of what I will be doing in the future.

Although my time here at Garden Spot Village isn’t over yet, I am so thankful for everything that I have learned so far. I am excited to see everything that the future holds for me and am excited for all the projects I get to do in the future. I can’t wait to continue to work with this group of amazing mentors. This opportunity has given me so much valuable information about the accounting and business world and has locked in my plans to study it in the future.
