Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Jason Kearse – Social Media Internship

My internship is with the GSHS Tech Department at the Senior High campus. I serve as the Communications Intern, adding to the social media pages, and helping Mr. Johnson come up with new creative ideas to market the school district. During my time with the Tech Department so far, I’ve developed an even stronger admiration for the world of social media, an interest in the Communications field, and I’ve grown in my social skills.

At the beginning of my internship, I was assigned the responsibility to add posts to the social media platforms used by ELANCO. This included Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Our goal is to get our students more involved with the school. For my part, I was in charge of covering the senior high campus. When the high school had schoolwide events going on, it was my responsibility to cover them, taking pictures of the students at the events, then posting them to the social media platforms. Important events and dates for the high school were also added, such as deadlines and dates for upcoming events were also part of my job to add to the social media platforms.

As of right now I, along with the other Communications interns, are helping Mr. Johnson work on our district newsletter. I am in charge of writing an article on the German exchange program that occurred, writing the articles on the new staff members, as well as helping Mr. Johnson get in contact with Garden Spot Alumni. I am also helping Mr. Johnson create a new image for the side of the Marching Band trailer.

This internship has helped me grow a great deal. Social media has always been an interest of mine. I enjoy being creative and posting to my own social media. This internship has allowed me to use that creativity to promote our school in order to get more people involved I’ve had to step a bit out of my comfort zone and talk to multiple people at once, for example, I had to explain to the yearbook club what the Tech Department would hope to achieve this year with their social media, and created a way to share images with each other using Google Drive. My skills as a thinker have grown to be more creative, as I have to think creatively in order to keep our social media exciting and engaging.

I greatly look forward to seeing what else this internship has to offer me. In the future, I hope to maybe one day pursue a career in social media management of some type on the side once I’m out of college. So far, my internship has been a truly great and amazing experience that I really look forward to completing. I’m excited to see where the projects we are working on go and how much we achieve in getting students more involved with the school.
