Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Thea Martin – Athletic Training Internship

My name is Thea Martin and I am a senior at Garden Spot High School. This school year has been nothing short of exciting as I have been fully engaged in my internship through Pathways. I am the Student Athletic Trainer within Garden Spot’s Athletic Training department. My mentor is Michelle Park, the Athletic Trainer, and Assistant Athletic Director.

My internship encompasses many of the behind-the-scenes moments for all the sporting events at our high school: preparing equipment for games/practices, taking care of student-athletes, and assisting athletes when in need. Through my experience, I have learned a lot about time management and how to efficiently get tasks done. I am very impressed by Michelle’s tactics of organizing her schedule and accomplishing her goals in an orderly fashion. From what I have observed, time management, compassion, and communication skills are tremendously impactful skills to have in Athletic Training as well as in life.

As the weeks have gone by, my internship has brought a lot of essential life qualities to the surface; I have found myself being more gentle and compassionate towards others. Truly, this internship has expanded wider than simply medical field experience. Hopefully, I can transform these skills into lifelong qualities. Furthermore, I am excited to get this exposure in the medical field due to my interest in pursuing a degree in Pre-Med.

Overall, my experience interning within Garden Spot’s Athletic Training has not only prepared me for my future career in the medical field but also in preparation for my future successes and challenges. I am thoroughly excited to see what the rest of my internship holds.
