In my opinion is that he was a thief and he stole the copper. So he was being hunted down ,and the injury in his hand was another arrow that was shot at his hand when he was escaping. Then a few days latter he found some stuff to make bread and other foods hw also got some sticks  and made some string to make a bow and arrows. He heard some voices so he continued running and. Then when he thought he was safe he was shot with arrow in his shoulder. And then he tied to crawl away but then he died. Then they were going to get the copper but a snow storm came and covered it up.
