Independent Novel Reaction: The Call of the Wild

For my independent novel, I read The Call of the Wild by Jack London. The book embodies the idea of bravery and leadership. From being sold to escaping to building a reputation and becoming leader of a pack, this novel shows the rough patches that you can experienc ein life and how you can grow from them. For my creative project, I will be creating a promotional campaign. I will be using canva, for the most part, making posters, instagram posts, and news ads.

Response Post

Our actions are a complete reflection of what we grow up learning. These influences push us in certain directions and help us form our own opinions. When you are growing up, you are influenced by everything you hear, whether it be your parents opinions or a friend, everything can sway you. You end up with a point of view that can be very difficult to change, which can become a problem. This can effect our impact on society.

Class Discussion

This past week, the class held very good, thoughtful discussions. With that being said, our socratic seminar touched base on some things in our society that are affecting us currently, such as social media. Social media has created an image for everyone, making it seem like everyone is perfect. This leads to comparison, which can ultimately put people into a depressive mental state. We talked about how we can fix this epidemic, but it contradicts itself. This means that if we were to stop the use of these platforms, we would have to spread the word through them. Alongside this, we also brought up the idea of the younger generations having access to these social medias, and electronics in general. This puts these children at risk of maturing and losing their innocence too early. Overall, our class discussion was very meaningful and everyone was able to put their best foot forward in the right direction.

Lancaster County vs. Chester County Voting Restrictions

Over the past couple of years, a problem in the way of unequal voting processes have surfaced, especially in Lancaster and Chester county. There were several complaints in the November Midterm election that Pennsylvania voters did not have an equal opportunity to cast or correct votes. From the officials point of views, there were several errors in the voting system and this then affected the overall outcome of the elections. in my opinion, I feel there needs to be way that this is tracked so we know when and where errors occur. When it comes down to it, nothing should be affecting our future of political leaders.

Why does this happen?

Is there any way we could even attempt to fix it?

Independent Novel First Impression: The Call of the Wild

For this quarter, we were asked to choose a classic book written by an American author. The book I have chosen to read is The Call of the Wild by Jack London. I chose this book for the sole reason that I have never read anything by Jack London and I am interested to read and understand his writing style. The first couple pages set up for the rest of the story and I am excited to learn more about the main characters.

Thoughts on Class Content: Cultural Appropriation

In the way of class content, we had a very good and engaging conversation about cultural appropriation. The idea of educating children was brought about, which I completely agree with. Teaching children about cultural appropriation while they are younger gives a good foundation for their future of understanding. Ideas such as halloween costumes falls into this as well. Education based off one’s interests can also lead to a better understanding and respect for different cultures.

Independent Novel: Final Project

For my final project, I decided to create a playlist relating to my main character. Enjoy!

Wanted Dead or Alive

Bon Jovi

The song, Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi, is a perfect song to describe Virginia Hall. Virginia is wanted all over France and several countries because of her stealthy activities related to the American side. Once her cover was blown, she was immediately put out as wanted either dead or alive, the opposing side wanted her and all of her information. She was on the run for a while, yet no one could catch her. Hall and her undercover identity were wanted all across Europe because of her gaining and feeding information to the American military,

Social Cues

Cage The Elephant

The song, Social Cues by Cage The Elephant, works with her hidden identity. Not being afraid, hiding, and lying all are parts of the inner workings in relation with Virginia Hall. Her name was known after her cover was blown, but no one could ever find her. She was hiding and living life on the edge at the same time. Within this song, there is also a lot of self doubt, which Hall also struggled with while on the run.

Molly’s Chambers

Kings Of Leon

The song, Molly’s Chambers by Kings Of Leon, relates to Virginia Hall’s spunky and bold personality. She can change your mind and manipulate your thinking. Hall did this all throughout her career as an American spy. She holds all the important information from the enemy side. Once they thought they broke her and got information out of her, she turned around with a smack in the face. The “information” that they collected from her was all lies.

Scotland

The Lumineers

The song, Scotland by The Lumineers, repeats how “you could never feel my story” and “she’s in control.” These lyrics perfectly represent Virginia Hall. She was in control, whether you knew it or not, she knew everything. Also, you would never know her full story. Of course the author found out a lot of facts and information, as well as scenarios, but you could never know her internal thoughts. Virginia understood and knew everything, but no one knew anything about her.

Far From Home

Sam Tinnesz

The song, Far From Home by Sam Tinnesz, focuses on how you can be gone but not forgotten. Referencing a raven, they are always on the lookout for anything, just as Hall did. Virginia was very far from home, running across France to keep herself hidden. The lyrics, “Not where I belong,” come hand in hand with Hall’s job placement, but she worked with it. She did help win the war after all.

Blood // Water

Grandson

The song, Blood // Water by Grandson, can describe Virginia’s life, which she lived courageously. Her job was very risky, especially since she was a female spy. Like a lamb to the slaughter, she would have been dead in a single second if she was caught. The song repeats ‘We’ll never get free,” and Virginia knew she may never return to the US because she risked getting captured. Once she was found, and going to be interrogated, she became the violence and went on the run again. She knew exactly what she needed to do to cheat death.

A Major Crack Found on Bridge Linking Arkansas and Tennessee

This past week, a crack was reported on the Interstate 40 bridge that links Arkansas and Tennessee. The bridge was officially shut down on Wednesday, May 12th, while engineers and officials say it could take months to repair. Cars, tractor trailers, and barges are all put on detours for safety precautions so no more damage is done to the bridge or if it were to collapse. The crack is said to be a “‘significant fracture’ in one of the two 900-foot horizontal steel beams,” CBS reports. It was brought to attention when two frantic 911 calls were received. It has completely backed up both land and water traffic.

Would you be upset if you were detoured?

Would you be fearful if you were on the bridge when it was reported?

Independent Novel: Update

This quarter, I read A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II by Sonia Purnell. Overall, it was a very interesting book. It gave a glimpse into the life of a spy, and the struggles and risks that come with it. Virginia Hall, the woman the story is about, was an amazing role model in the uncover community. She created many networks throughout France and even found and identified air strikes and undercover weaponry. Hall even had a bounty placed on her, but with her master stealth, was never caught and lived the rest of her life as a spy. The most interesting part about this book was that the author showed a map, code names, and field names that all involved Virginia. All in all, i definitely recommend this book to anyone who is largely interested in history and mostly unknown situations.

For my book project, I will be creating a playlist.

Long Jump

Long jumping is where you have a long run way that you sprint down and then jump as far as you can into a sandpit after stepping on (hitting) the board. After you jump, the distance from the board to the area of the sand you landed in is measured. With that being said, you can still mess up. This is referred to as a foul. This happens when the jumpers foot lands beyond the board. The athlete with the farthest jump wins. That is a brief overview of long jumping.
