This week’s discussion article is about Georgia Gilmore, a woman who kept the Montgomery Bus Boycott going. Georgia Gilmore’s first ties to the bus boycotts came after she was shouted at for boarding the bus “wrongly” and went to “correct” it by going through the back door when the bus driver sped off without her. She then vowed to never ride a bus again and started to fuel the movement. Her and other women raised money in secrecy by cooking food and selling it in different places. This “money from nowhere” as it was called, was then used to establish a carpool system that allowed the protesters to not use the buses.

Questions:

  • Do you think that the carpool system was better than the bus system? Why?
  • Who do you think fueled the movement better, Rosa Parks or Georgia Gilmore?
  • What would you say if you had to explain the impact Georgia Gilmore and her group made on the Montgomery Bus Boycott?
