Week 2

Hi Parents,

At the start of most weeks I try to send an email to let you know about what we are learning that week.  I usually send it on Mondays but if it is a particularly busy week it may not come until a day or two later (and I apologize in advance for that).

This week we are beginning our reading series called, “Reading Street.”  At the beginning of each week you will see a Family Times sheet come home.  This sheet will tell you the book we are reading that week, our comprehension focus, the high frequency words we are learning to read and write, amazing words which are like vocabulary words (this week our words are first, second, third…), as well as a suggestion for an activity to complete each day.  I hope that you find these sheets helpful.  They do a really great job of informing you about what we are learning each week in kindergarten.

We are beginning to preview the alphabet.  This is only a preview!  If your child does not know these letters by the end of the week… that is okay!  We are working hard on learning what a letter is, the difference between a letter and a number and the difference between a letter and a word.  We are also learning about capitals vs. lowercase letters as well as just learning to pay close attention to the difference between letters such as b/d, p/q, n/h…  Once we are done previewing the alphabet then we will focus on one or two letters per week where we will work hard to learn the sound the letter makes and to read words with that letter in them.

We have been working on some beginning of the year letter identification and sounds assessments.  Mrs. M has been helping me to assess the students and you will be receiving a parent report tomorrow.  You can use this information to practice letters and sounds at home.

Just for FUN!  – Today was extra exciting… we meet a new friend on the playground today…. Mr. Toad!  I hope you enjoy the pictures.  We first saw him during AM recess and he stuck around for PM recess too.
