Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Octavia Nacu – Business Internship

My name is Octavia Nacu, and I am a senior at Garden Spot. I have an internship with the New Holland Fair and work at their building in New Holland every other week, typically on Mondays and Wednesdays. My mentor, Paulene Redding, is the head of the New Holland Fair Board, and who I aid every other week.

When I’m in the building, I assist my mentor with organizing files and uploading them to be accessed online. I have been helping the New Holland Fair move from several filing cabinets full of contracts to Excel spreadsheets that are easily accessible. Not only are the contracts easier to access, but the rooms look a lot nicer! On the days I’m not in the building, I do some remote work. This typically looks like getting in contact with organizations. I am currently working on trying to connect with the elementary schools to have the kids’ art displayed during fair week, and even some educational events or shows. Once I get this boulder moving, I will be reaching out to students at Garden Spot High School to create a Junior Fair Board so that the high school can get involved with planning events and truly showcasing New Holland’s talented student body.

Besides organizing, emailing, and uploading, I also attend the New Holland Fair Board Meetings once a month. I have been able to go to 2 meetings so far, and they’ve been pretty eventful. Whilst covering important issues and upcoming events, I’ve noticed just how passionate these people are. They volunteer their time to run the fair that locals know and love each year. I am so grateful that I get to be a part of that this year. While they do take the fair very seriously, it surprised me how charismatic and humorous they are. I genuinely enjoy coming to the board meetings because I know what a great sense of humor they all have.

The wonderful board has taken me in as one of their own, and I’m thrilled to have made connections with all of them. Specifically, I am extremely grateful for Paulene. She is understanding and communicative and is truly a great leader. She has shown me the importance of being kind and motivated in a work environment by leading the board with no interest in wasting anyone’s time, but making it enjoyable. I intend to apply these techniques when I have leadership positions in the future. I have really enjoyed working with Paulene and the board so far, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of the semester with them.
