Maica Mesana – Medical Internship

Hi! My name is Maica Mesana, and this semester I am interning at Resonance Audiology where I had the privilege of going to two of their three offices: one in Garden Spot Village and one on Main St. New Holland. It has been an amazing experience so far and I am grateful for the opportunity to intern here with a great team of people.

Each day is a little different. I have been able to sit in on appointments with Drs. Ryan & Zoe Horan and their doctoral resident Katie. I have been able to write their appointment notes and through that have learned a bit of the terminology. I have sat in on regular hearing aid checks, hearing tests, wax removals, and more. It has been so cool to learn about audiology. I have been able to learn how to read the graphs a bit and how hearing aids are programmed to aid different kinds of hearing loss.

Along with sitting in on appointments, I learned some front desk tasks. Jodi, the office manager, has taught me how to schedule appointments and pay invoices, as well as upload files into patient info. I have also answered phone calls and take messages for Zoe while she was out. I also put together bags for patients who are getting new hearing aids, as well as information folders. I now know how to clean hearing aids and have learned a bit about the parts of hearing aids and how they work.

It has been really interesting to see how a private practice works. I have loved seeing the different responsibilities each person has and this experience definitely gave me a new perspective on where I would want to work in the future. I plan on going to nursing school in the fall and will have to eventually decide where I want to work. Interning at Resonance has shown me how flexible the hours are at a private practice, and it is a more relaxed pace. Overall, this internship has been a great experience so far, and I am very lucky to have an amazing group of people to learn from at the office.
