Cameron Proviano – Film Production Internship

I have been participating in an internship at Reading Film Studio LLC, in Reading PA. Originally I started my internship around November of 2020, but then connected my affiliation with the studio to the Pathways Program for the second semester of my senior year. Since then I have created and helped produce advertisements, interviews, and commercials. Not only have I learned the basic skills to produce quality films, but I’ve gotten the opportunity to understand the flow of business in the film industry.

In late October and early November a movie titled, “The Mick and the Trick,” was in the middle of production at Reading Film Studios. Within my first couple of days of taking the trip up to Reading after school, I was able to witness an independent movie being shot and filmed. It was an experience I couldn’t get anywhere else. Since then curiosity has taken me to dive deeper into the subject. I’ve found that I enjoy editing and creating things on screen that didn’t appear in the original shot. Although some of my jobs at my internship have included setting up shots and filming them, most of the work I do is post-production editing. A normal daily routine for me would be working with my mentor, first watching him edit a scene he’s working on for his actual clients, then I would try to do similar things with the footage I have. Although some days I may be asked to get a video that had certain requirements, or I would come in for shoots a client scheduled. Currently, I am practicing ways I can take video with post-production already in mind. This is called shooting to edit.

I actually found this internship while looking for another job. Eight months ago I was unprepared to start my senior year, not knowing what I wanted to go to college for and where. What I did know is that I wanted more experience. Trying new things I haven’t done before to see what I like. Film has always been an interest of mine. I love movies, and for being a creative person I haven’t been able to really channel that creativity into anything meaningful, at least at school. Since I’ve started interning I’ve learned how my thoughts can create not just a digital reality through film, but how I can also transfer that same energy to creating a meaningful life I want to live. Now in late March 2021, I’m enrolled at Arizona State University, with my Freshman year starting the fall of 2021, and I’m going to be studying Film Practices. Not only have I found something I enjoy and see myself doing in the future, but I already have one foot in the door.

Overall, I’m glad I found my path outside of school. It lets me have the confidence that I can chase the things I enjoy and create the life I want. Film isn’t a safe industry to go into employment-wise. The same can be said for me going to college in Arizona even though I have opportunities here. But maybe that’s just the point. To live with uncertainty, to be involved in things I‘ve never been before, to be out of my league, because without those things I’m passionless.
