Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Zach Becker – Computer Programming Internship

Hi, my name is Zach Becker, and I am a senior at Garden Spot High School. I currently have an internship with Mr. Long, a Middle School teacher there. I started the internship at the beginning of my second semester of 12th grade and have been doing it daily since. My problem solving, and programming skills have greatly increased throughout this time as I have been working to learn how to program a Sphero RVR, which is a robot car that can be modified to do many things such as detect when it is near walls or identify colors with the help of some sensors.

I normally spend around 12 to 18 hours a week doing my internship, as it is fully remote, but I do go into school sometimes for check-ins or to get new equipment. I have learned many skills throughout my time working with the robot car, such as how to code in python, how to use a raspberry pi, which is basically a programmable microcomputer. I have also strengthened my communication skills by talking a lot with a company called CareerLink as they are paying me for my time as an intern, and other people such as workers for the Sphero RVR company and asking them for help with a project.

I have been interested in technology and working with it ever since I was a little kid and I remember one of the first things I ever did tech-related was installing a new Wi-Fi router for my grandparents when I was around the age of 8.  Ever since then I have been learning many new tech skills such as coding games in multiple coding languages, programming robots, and some digital design skills.

This internship has helped strengthen my interest in the tech industry and kept up my interest in tech as I am going into a robotics degree this fall. With the skills I learned from the internship, I will be more qualified in the future for jobs or other internships. I can also use my skills in everyday life such as fixing my own devices or helping friends and family with tech-related problems.
