October20

Only two weeks left until the end of the first marking period. I CANNOT believe it! The students continue to work hard each and everyday!

Reading: Last week we finished up reviewing skills from Unit 1 such as compare and contrast, author’s purpose, story elements, and sequencing. We worked on test taking strategies as we worked through comparing two passages and answering questions on them. The students will begin a new story this week titled Penguin Chick. The skills for this story are identifying main idea and details, monitoring and clarifying as we read, and using graphic organizers. Students will have a new spelling list this week and a test on Friday.

Writing: Students took the first writing sample on Thursday. I look forward to reading all of their narrative pieces. We are still working on our personal narratives and will focus on nouns this week.

Math: In math, we finished our unit on Place Value. The students worked on identifying place, values, and expressing numbers in standard, expanded, and word form. Graded tests will be coming home in this week’s Friday Folders. We will move to rounding and estimating this week.

Science: Brubaker Park was wonderful! We could not have asked for nicer weather! The high school students did a fabulous job setting up stations for our students. The students seemed to take a great deal away from our morning there. I enjoyed hearing their write-ups about what they learned. We wrapped up our unit on Agriculture and will move to Weather this week.

Odds and Ends:

10/30 is the end of the first marking period.

11/1 is Harvest Day

11/14 and 11/15 is Parent/Teacher Conferences. Papers were sent home in last week’s Friday Folders. Please let me know if you need another.

Just a reminder: Please remember to send an excuse card or note when your child misses a day of school.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me! Have a wonderful Sunday afternoon!

Thank you,

Miss Gentile
