What a WONDERFUL two weeks it has been in third grade! I’m looking forward to all that this year will bring us. It is my goal to use this blog to inform all of the the third grade families about the happenings in our classroom.

Reading– We have completed our first story in Reading Street titled When Charlie McButton Lost Power. While reading this story, we focused on story elements such as character, setting, and theme. In addition, we explored complete and incomplete sentences as well as vc/cv patterns in words. Friday, we took our first Weekly Test which will be sent home this week. Because many students are unfamiliar with the testing format, this test will NOT count for a grade.

This week we are moving onto a new story, What About Me? and we will be focusing on sequencing events in a story. Our next Weekly Test is scheduled for Friday, September 13th.

Math– In math, we have been working on many different topics as a review of skills from last year. So far we have touched on number grids, using our Student Reference Books, number sequences, and tools used for measurement. We have begun our small groups and my group is working on multidigit addition and subtraction with regrouping. I’m impressed with how hard the students are working!!!

Science– I’m very excited about what we have started in science. Last week we began our unit on the Scientific Method. We watched a BrainPop video and learned a song to show us the steps. The students worked in groups to complete an experiment with string and sound using the steps of the scientific method. This week we will move onto a few more fun experiments to work with the steps even more!

Writing– In writing, the students have been introduced to a personal narrative. This week they will begin to outline and write their own. I’m excited to read their completed work!

Odds and Ends

I was so happy to meet with many families at our Back to School night! If you were unable to make it, I sent home all of the goodies in the student’s Friday Folders. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Each Friday, I will send home a Friday Folder. Please look through that with our child and go over the Peek at the Week. In the future, tests will be included in the folder to be signed and returned as well. Please send the folder back with your child on Monday mornings!

If you are in need of a district calendar, they can be found online through the district site.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Thank you,

Miss Gentile
