Parents as Partners

Policy for Parent Involvement

The community, parents, staff, and students of Brecknock Elementary School are dedicated to providing a safe atmosphere of acceptance for the diversity of learners. Each student is guaranteed an opportunity for growth and success through a coordinated, ongoing, systematic implementation of effective instruction and intervention. Brecknock Elementary School and parents will serve as equal partners for student learning.

Ways to Become Involved

Throughout the year we offer a variety of community-building activities that encourage parent participation, such as Dads & Donuts in the fall and Moms & Muffins in the spring. These are well-attended, popular events that help build community! Parents are always welcome to attend school-wide events such as Field Day, musical performances, assemblies, and special classroom event.

One of the greatest things you can do to become involved in your child’s education is to TALK to him about his school experiences. What is he learning? What is he interested in learning about? What school activities does he most enjoy? Least enjoy? Develop an ongoing dialogue with your child about what he is learning and doing at school. Read through Friday folder contents and check out his class website/blog together. He will know that you are interested and engaged in his school life, even though you cannot be here each and every day.

WE WELCOME VOLUNTEERS!

We welcome parent and adult family volunteers in our school and appreciate your time! Volunteers work at the request of the faculty and administration; performing a variety of jobs at school such as writing activities, tutor aids, listening to children read, chaperones, demonstrating hobbies or vocational skills, etc. Volunteers may also help in non-instructional services such as typing, making copies for teachers, designing bulletin board displays, correcting papers, etc. Volunteers work in the school or at home at their convenience, anywhere from several hours a week to once a month, or helping with special projects.

***All volunteers are required to complete Elanco’s Volunteer Certification Forms before beginning their work as a volunteer. You will receive a card showing that you are an ELANCO approved volunteer after you have completed the required documentation.***

Volunteers are required to sign in at the school office and to wear a volunteer sticker at each visit. Due to the distraction of students, please make other arrangements for younger siblings when volunteering in the classroom.

Brecknock’s Volunteer Coordinator for 2017-2018 is Carolyn Sauder. If you would like more information, or to sign up to volunteer, please contact the main office (445-8600).  Look for information coming home regarding parent volunteers during the first weeks of school.
