The basic principle of The Flat Stanley Project is to connect your child, student or classroom with other children, classrooms, or people will to participate in the Project. Kids then talk about, track, and write about their flat character’s journey and adventures. Although similar to a pen-pal activity, Flat Stanley is actually much more enriching-students don’t have to wonder where to begin or what to write about. The sender and the recipient already have a mutual friend, Flat Stanley. Writing and learning become easier, flows naturally, and tends to be more creative. This is what teachers call an “authentic” literacy project, in that kids are inspired to write of their own passion and excitement about the project, and given the freedom to write about many things.
Our geography studies have us headed in another direction! Students are currently writing letters to a Southeast state that they researched. They looked at coordinates of capitals, population, bodies of water, landforms, etc. and now they are writing letters to famous sites located in their state. We’re sending letters, enclosed with a Flat Stanley to the Everglades, Luray Caverns, Graceland, the Grand Ole Opry, and many other amazing places. It is our hope that we will receive pictures of our Flat Stanleys in our chosen states. This combined geography, research, and letter writing into one fun activity. Stay tuned for some pictures, as soon as we receive them!

#Celebrating Team Twaddell on PhotoPeach
Just a reminder that there will be an “Open Classroom” and self-guided tours tomorrow, August 22, 2016 from 9:00-11:00 and 1:00-3:00. I will be working in the classroom between 9 and 11. Enjoy your last full week of summer!
See you soon!
Dear Student, ,
Greetings to a member of New Holland Elementary’s
“Team Twaddell.” I hope that you are having an enjoyable summer. I am very anxious to meet all of you! Rather than wait until August 29th, I thought I would offer an opportunity for us to get together. On Tuesday, July 19th Mrs. Sneath and I will be at the ELANCO Public Library in New Holland from 4:00-6:00pm. This will be an opportunity for us to meet, enjoy some light refreshments, sign up for a library card, and even check out a book. You will also have time to make a “Flat Stanley” to help you share your summer adventures with your classmates. In addition you will receive information about a summer reading opportunity for our classroom. Reading one book, and completing a book brochure will enable you to begin the school year with $200.00 in your classroom checking account. (more about that later) When we return to school in August, I will be anxious to hear all about your summer fun through your FLAT STANLEY pics. I understand that summer vacations, and other commitments may prevent you from attending, but I hope we have a good turnout. Feel free to contact me via email at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions or concerns.
I have had a great summer with my family. We will be traveling to Williamsburg, Virginia at the end of July. There we will enjoy swimming, tennis, and of course Busch Gardens Amusement Park. We will also visit nearby Jamestown, and tour an archeological site. I am excited to share any new books/resources that I find for our classroom studies of this period in history.
Finally, I will be the “new kid on the block,” this year at NHES so I will be counting on you to help me out. Be sure to visit our classroom blog (as soon as it becomes available) for new information and updates regarding the 2016-2017 school year. In addition, your parents can join my Remind site. Remind is a cool app that I will be using to communicate with your parents throughout the school year. My class code is TeamTgr5.
Below is a list of the suggested materials and supplies for this year.
– a 2.5 or 3inch 3 ring binder
– 5 subject dividers
– pencil POUCH with holes to place inside binder
Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Dear Parents ,
Let’s get your kids excited for the new school year. How about a class activity that promotes literacy, geography, and writing? There is an interesting book character by the name Flat Stanley. The story is about a little boy named Stanley who had a bulletin board fall on him and smashed him flat. He was not injured; he was just flattened and he could easily be sent in the mail to many places. His travels were exciting and educational as he learns about many different travel locations.
Before the first day of school each child will be making their own Flat Stanley, and will be photographing him in many different locations. From their own backyard, cabin, or even the beach. The purpose is to learn more about the US and even the world. You could even email, or mail your Flat Stanley to a friend, or relative who lives in another state or country….ask them to take a photo of Stanley. Try and be creative in who you send it to, and throughout the school year we will continue to see how many places he can go in one year. Hopefully we will “Go Global!”
