Spectacular Sergeant Stubby

Before we start, almost all information from this website.  The rest is probably made up.  By Summer and Mae.

Sergeant Stubby is a mix of a Boston Round Head, American Bull Terrier, and a Boston Bull Terrier.  He was born on July 21st 1916.  Stubby was found while wandering the campus Yale University in Connecticut while the 102nd Infantry was training.  The puppy stayed with them as they drilled, he learned bugle calls, drills, (like intruder drills and stuff) and even how to salute! One soldier, Corporal Robert Conroy, who before worked at a bakery called Sweets By Summer became fond of little Stubby.

When it came time for the soldiers to sail away, Robert hid Stubby on board the troop ship.  As they were getting off the ship, he hid Stubby in his coat without notice.  Only his best friend, James Salsa, asked why he was bending over so weirdly.  So he told him what he was doing and that he better not tell Captain Coo-Koo.  James agreed.  Once they got off the ship, Stubby fell from Robert’s coat for everyone to see.  Oops.  But when Stubby did his cutie salute, everybody wanted him to join the United States Army, even Captain Coo-Koo!

A couple of days passed and it was almost time for World War l.  They all got trained hard and well, including Stubby.  When the war started, Stubby marched around like a trained soldier, and that’s what he became.  In Stubby’s whole career, he served for 18 months, 4 offensives, and 17 battles.  At the end of his third battle, he gained the name Sergeant Stubby.

When Sergeant Stubby came home, he became a celebrity, and marched in and normally led many parades all over the country.  He also met many presidents like Calvin Coolidge, Warren G. Harding, and Woodrow Wilson.  And then in 1921 General John J. Pershing presented Sergeant Stubby a gold medal from the Humane Education Society, which was the subject of a famous photograph.  And then again in 1921, he became the Georgetown Hoyas’ team mascot.  His job would be to get a football at halftime and nudge it around the field as an amusement to the audience.

Unfortunately, Sergeant Stubby died in 1926 while sleeping.  After his death, he was preserved with his skin mounted on a plaster cast, and presented to the Smithsonian in 1956.

Thank-you for your service Sergeant Stubby!  ?

Fabulous 5k

On Saturday October 12th, 2016, Girls On The Run ran a 5k at Millersville University.  GOTR teams from all around the area came to run with their running buddies.  We had to be there at 8:00 a.m.  Once we got there, we had 30 minutes before the leaders did some stretches with us all.  While we were waiting, we could get crazy stuff on like, pink, green, or purple hairspray, tattoos, and so on.

Coo-Coo Kate and I are getting ready!

Coo-Coo Kate (Left)  Me (Right)

At about maybe 8:45 a.m., they started stretches.  We jogged in place, did star jumps, etc.  Then, we all got lined up in our running spots.  If you went toward the purple balloons, it meant that you wanted to run all of it.  If you went near the green balloons, that meant that you wanted to walk and run.  And if you wanted to walk most of it, you went by the pink balloons.  My running buddy and I went toward the purple balloons because I wanted to try to run all of the 5k.

We started running at about 9:05 a.m.  It started off a little cramped, but then we were fine.  They said that there was a record breaking number of people there, but they never said how many.  During the run, I only took 2 short walk brakes and maybe 1 really short one when we were going across the field.  My running buddy, Kylie, and I finished in 37 minutes and 9 seconds.  It was really fun.  When you crossed the finish line, people hung a medal around your head.  Then, we went over to some tables to get a banana, a bag of chips, and some water.

A little later, Kylie and I made our way over to the Sponsor Tables where there was all sorts of games and things you could get.  I got lots of things.  I got an Atlee Hall bag, an LOA water bottle, an Obgyn sweat bracelet thing, and a Sky Zone bracelet.  That 5k was so fun!

We finished! :)

We finished! 🙂

Glorious Girls On The Run

I am a part of an after school activity called Girls On The Run.  (GOTR)  It is where girls from your school in 3rd-5th grade can sign up and join.  Girls from all over the USA have teams for it.  At my school, there are two teams.  I am on the Green Team, and it has 9 members.  The other team is the Purple Team, I was on that team last season.  There is a spring season, and a fall season.  My favorite is the fall season.  It is my favorite because I LOVE running in colder weather.

At the beginning of the season, we each come up with a special GOTR name.  It is an adjective that has to start with the same letter or sound that you put at the beginning of your actual name.  I am Spirited Summer.

I have been in Girls On The Run ever since I could- at the beginning of 3rd Grade.  Ever since I could remember, I had fun at GOTR.  We talk about things like gratitude, making friends, showing empathy, our strengths, and so on.  Each team has 4 coaches.  Our head coach is Joyous Jess.

After we talk, we do some stretches and a warm up game.  Then we usually talk about what we are doing for our work out, which is when we run around our school field.  Most of the time we have lap counters to count how many laps we do so that we can write it on our Identity Cards.

At the end of each practice, we nominate people for an energy cheer.  They go in the middle of our circle.  Some of our energy cheers are called Fire Cracker, Fan-Tastic, Banana, Mohawk, and so on.  Then we all do the energy cheer, and then put our hands in the middle.  At the count of three, we lift our hands up and say, “GIRLS ON THE RUN IS SO MUCH FUN!”  Well, because it is.

We do GOTR to learn and practice for a 5k at the end of each season.  In the spring, it is at F&M.  In the fall, it is at Millersville University.  Each girl has a running buddy to run with them.  My running buddy this season is my aunt, Kylie.  We are going to dress up all crazy and awesome.  A 5k is 3.1 miles long.  There are lots of people there, probably over 5,000 or so.

Our last GOTR practice for this season before the 5k is on Wednesday, November 9th, 2016.  The 5k is on Saturday, November 12th, 2016 this season.  After the 5k, we have a Final Celebration to celebrate.  Then we take a long break before the next season starts.  It is so exciting!

The Adventures of Frank Bender: The Pencil War, Chapter 4: The War

Later that day, Pinky Pink Butt heard a knock on the door.  She stumbled over to answer it.  She froze as Prudy Pencil (their neighbor) was standing right in front of her.  “Is Frank home?,” he asked.

Pinky Pink Butt ran away screaming for Frank who was taking a nap in his little corner.  Frank instantly shot up out of his piles of blankets toppling over him.  It looked like a bomb had just exploded as the blankets flew in the air.  Frank ran to the door and was about to scream, but instead just said, “Uh-oh.  Prudy, I thought I said that I was sorry for pushing your grandma down the stairs!”

“Oh, you did Frank.  But now there is something else on my mind.”

“What?,” Frank said, half regretting it.

“Our new neighbor.”

“Shirley?”

“No, the garbage can.”

“Really?”

“FRANK!  You ruined my cool moment!  You could have just said something like, it’s on, or something.  And yes Shirley!”

“Fine, it’s on.  But this is exactly why you were never my friend.”

“You just a mistake, my friend.  A really big one.  Gather up your team of 16 members.  Meet me 9:00 a.m. sharp by the recycling bin. Let me tell you now, it’s going to hurt!

“Nice spot.  I’ll have to be there at 8:00 a.m. to guard!”

Frank needed to assemble a team.  So he went around asking family members and friends.  Almost all said yes, except for Granny and Grampy.  The way Prudy got people on his team is that he would find someone and scare  them until they agreed to be on his team.

Later that day, Frank decided to take a stroll around the classroom.  Once again he saw the Pet Store.  Since no one else was with him, he went inside to look for his 16th team member.  As soon as he stepped into that place, he laid his eyes on a mini, green, monster pen.  “I’ll take this one!,” Frank said excitedly to the clerk.

“Good choice!  What’s its name going to be?”

“Hmmm…  Misfit Monster.”

“Okay.  Go over and meet me by the counter while I get him out.”

So then Frank met the clerk by the counter.  He brought Misfit Monster over and set him on a scale.  “6 pounds and 3 ounces,” said the clerk, “So that’s $6 and 3 cents.   Frank also bought a leash for Misfit Monster so that he could walk him home.

When Frank got home everyone was surprised.  But Pinky Pink Butt was as happy and jumpy as a frog that just in the desert for 6 months and finally got a giant bucket of water dumped on its face.  She ran right over and patted Misfit Monster on the head.

Frank was ready for war.  He called everyone over for a meeting at midnight to discuss the battle plan.  This was going to be the best war in history.
