Glorious Girls On The Run

I am a part of an after school activity called Girls On The Run.  (GOTR)  It is where girls from your school in 3rd-5th grade can sign up and join.  Girls from all over the USA have teams for it.  At my school, there are two teams.  I am on the Green Team, and it has 9 members.  The other team is the Purple Team, I was on that team last season.  There is a spring season, and a fall season.  My favorite is the fall season.  It is my favorite because I LOVE running in colder weather.

At the beginning of the season, we each come up with a special GOTR name.  It is an adjective that has to start with the same letter or sound that you put at the beginning of your actual name.  I am Spirited Summer.

I have been in Girls On The Run ever since I could- at the beginning of 3rd Grade.  Ever since I could remember, I had fun at GOTR.  We talk about things like gratitude, making friends, showing empathy, our strengths, and so on.  Each team has 4 coaches.  Our head coach is Joyous Jess.

After we talk, we do some stretches and a warm up game.  Then we usually talk about what we are doing for our work out, which is when we run around our school field.  Most of the time we have lap counters to count how many laps we do so that we can write it on our Identity Cards.

At the end of each practice, we nominate people for an energy cheer.  They go in the middle of our circle.  Some of our energy cheers are called Fire Cracker, Fan-Tastic, Banana, Mohawk, and so on.  Then we all do the energy cheer, and then put our hands in the middle.  At the count of three, we lift our hands up and say, “GIRLS ON THE RUN IS SO MUCH FUN!”  Well, because it is.

We do GOTR to learn and practice for a 5k at the end of each season.  In the spring, it is at F&M.  In the fall, it is at Millersville University.  Each girl has a running buddy to run with them.  My running buddy this season is my aunt, Kylie.  We are going to dress up all crazy and awesome.  A 5k is 3.1 miles long.  There are lots of people there, probably over 5,000 or so.

Our last GOTR practice for this season before the 5k is on Wednesday, November 9th, 2016.  The 5k is on Saturday, November 12th, 2016 this season.  After the 5k, we have a Final Celebration to celebrate.  Then we take a long break before the next season starts.  It is so exciting!
