DEJ part 4-One Dark Throne INP#2

  QUOTE WITH PAGE NUMBER RESPONSE
1 “Genevieve’s cheeks are rosy pink, and her lilac irises sparkle.” (1) I like the imagery used in this quote. I can imagine her face and the way the author wrote it made her seem almost magical.
2

“If only they knew what wicked thoughts whirled inside that pretty head.” (2)

Mirabella is a pretty face but she has been through so much and has to constantly be reminded of that.
3

“Natalia barks laughter.” (2)

I like the way they described her laughing, but when I think of “barks” I think of “she barks out orders.”
4

“Arsinoe, with her scarred face, trousers with frayed cuffs, and shorn, unkempt hair. No one could be attracted to that. They must be curious about her bear.” (3)

Arsinoe went through a lot in the last book and her looks have been stripped from her so she knows she’s not the one they’re looking at.
5

“Perhaps that is how all men love. More with their eyes than their hearts.” (22)

Jules is quite cold towards Joseph after he cheated on her with Mirabella and she blames it on her looks.
6

“Mirabella’s stomach goes cold at the sound of her screams.” (28)

Mirabella heard the screams of one of her dear friends and it hurt more than her own pain.
7

“The hatchet comes down, one hard, chopping thud into the table.” (29)

Mirabella had to cut off a child’s arm because she put on poisoned gloves that queen Katharine sent for Mirabella.
8

“Mirabella and Eliizabeth suppress their smiles. But there is not much light; the moon is waning, and what slice is left is obscured by the clouds.” (31)

They’re happy to be alive but they know their future is still grim.
9

“Arsinoe walks to the bent-over tree, ready to reopen the cuts in her palm, to paint the bear’s rune in blood and press it to the bark.” (44)

This is how she was able to act like her bear was her familiar, because she didn’t actually have one, she used magic to make a fake one.
10

“Arsinoe touches the knife to her skin then pulls back.” (44)

She’s using low magic and has no idea what will happen so she is hesitant.
11

“Cait and Madrigal wait until the front door slams before they speak again.” (52)

They wanted to gossip about the other maid and literally waited until the second she left the room.
12

Talk, she thinks, but she can barely force her jaw apart.” (60)

Katharine was trying to talk but because of the poison she had during training, all she could say was inner dialogue.
13

“Mirabella walks cautiously towards Arsinoe laying on the ground.” (61)

Even though they’re sisters and she loves her, she knows Arsinoe was not raised to feel anything towards her, so if Arsinoe is alive she could kill Mirabella for getting too close.
14

“The jolt goes through the bottoms of her feet, and she drops into a tight crouch as it slams her teeth together.”(60)

When Mirabella jumped out of the tree to hide from Arsinoe’s bear, her actions were described in a way that made you feel like it was you jumping.
15

“She screams and strikes out with everything she has.”(64)

Jules wanted to help Arsinoe but Joseph (her boyfriend) was pinning her down because he didn’t want to see her get hurt, but Jules was not having it.
16

“Natalia crumples the letter in her fist.” (67)

When Natalia finds out her nephew (the one that threw Katharine off a cliff) is coming back, she’s enraged
17

“She knows what it must have looked like: a gaudy, overdone carriage with silver fastenings and blue velvet cushions, the horses groomed to high polish and every one of their white hairs covered with dye.” (71)

Mirabella knew her carriage looked like that of a spoiled, wealthy, teenager, which was true, but she hated it because of the poverty in her kingdom.
18

“Mirabella turns back and forth in front of the mirror with a pained expression as Sara and the priestesses adjust the fall of her dress.”(93)

Mirabella is feeling sick because she knows she’s going to have to possibly kill or be killed by her sisters and just dressing up for the carnage feels sick.
19

“They are saying I ran home with my tail between my legs.”(94)

Arsinoe was talking about how the poisoners were talking about her being weak and comparing her to a scared animal.
20

“Arsinoe’s stomach as tight as a fist.”(101)

This quote uses a simile to compare Arsinoe’s stomach to a clenched fist in order to explain the feelings she was feeling.
21

“He enters the room ahead of her, so he does not see it when she takes up a short-bladed knife.”(137)

Katharine is about to avenge her near death by attacking her former boyfriend who through her off a cliff.
22

‘“Bree can hardly slice a sandwich.”’(155)

They’re talking about Bree because they need her to do a task but she isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed.
23

“She has taken down her hood, and red hair blazes past her shoulders.” (157)

I like how they compare her hair to fire, it’s a pretty picture to imagine.
24

“In the clearing, beneath the bent-over tree, Arsinoe lets Madrigal take fresh blood from her arm.”(159)

Arsinoe is dealing with low magic and I think something will go terribly wrong in the next few chapters.
25

“‘She is not clever.” Elizabeth’s voice is low as she wipes her eyes with the back of her hand. Mirabella puts her arms around her. “She is cruel.”(158)

They’re talking about Katharine because in this book she starts off sweet and innocent, then gets thrown off a cliff by her boyfriend, survives the fall, and comes back cruel and full of anger.
26

“Low magic always wields its own will.”(161)

Low magic is this books equivalent of dark magic and Arsinoe is unable to control it.
27

“I kept seeing images of my sisters… memories.”(163)

Arsinoe starts getting visions of how her sisters grew up, maybe it has something to do with them being triplets?

28

“‘Stop being such a child! If you win, you get to live, and that’s better than nothing!”(172) Jules compared her queen to that of a child because she was so afraid of losing her best friend, she wanted Arsinoe to fight with everything in her.

29

“‘I wasn’t going to hit you… not any harder than usual,”’(172) Jules says this to Arsinoe in a sarcastic way that I can relate to my life because this is how my sisters and I interact.

30

“In the market, there are so many white-robed priestesses that it looks like a raid.”(186) This is a simile that describes how the town looked with all the priestesses during the festival.
31

“Mirabella expected glares from poisoners.”(191)

She expected to be treated with disrespect in the land, but she got no reaction out of them.
32

“She is arm in arm with her suitor, the handsome boy with the golden-blond hair.”(191)

Mirabella had eyes on her sister’s suitor much like how she had eyes on Jule’s boyfriend.
33

“Arsinoe runs from the gathering at the cove.”(197)

When she found out her friend died, she couldn’t handle being in the same area as his body.
34

“Maybe she was mistaken, and the lanterns she saw from Joseph’s window were an illusion or a dream.”(207)

She missed her friend so much that she started to see hallucinations of him and started to believe they were real.
35

“Camden whines and swings her dark-tipped tail back and forth. Something is wrong.”(207)

Camden is a Jaguar but based on this he has the mannerisms of a loyal dog.
36

“He stands on his hind legs and roars so they will go away.”(211)

The horse tried to defend Mirabella because he was protective of her, but he ended up dying while doing so, which truly shows the love of animals.
37

“She smiles until the bear turns to fight.”(211)

Katharine thought she won the battle, but when she saw Arsinoe’s familiar, she realized that she was in for a fight
38

“Jules leans down and covers Arsinoe’s head with kisses. She is alive. She is even feisty.”(221)

Jules loves Arsinoe like a sister so when she thought she was dead it ended her, when she found out Arsinoe was alive, her joy was immeasurable.
39

“They will lock her up and put her to death as soon as the crown is decided.”(224)

This was a fear that the friends of each queen had because if their queen/friend died then their fate was in the hands of another
40

“In the pale light of the moon and stars, Arsinoe looks dead already.”(227)

When it says “dead already” I wonder if it means that she will die in this book, just not yet.
41

“Jules heaves Arsinoe’s body yo and calls for the horse to kneel. They are so tired. But Arsinoe is dying. So they have to ride.”(229)

This is what true friendship is: putting all your own physical and mental struggles aside to help the ones you love.
42

“The poisoners only make it as far as Highgate before they stop to celebrate.”(230)

They began celebrating before the victory was won which reminds me of the tortoise and the hare because the hare took a nap on the race thinking he was far enough ahead.
43

“‘You cannot really like him,” Pietyr snaps.

“Why not? There is plenty about him to like. I have never seen his eyes on anyone but me, for example. And I have not found daisies in his hair, put there by lusty priestesses.”’(231)

This reminds me of ever pair of ex’s ever because they’re just comparing themselves to new lovers. There’s also a lot of attitude shown by Katharine in this chapter towards Pietyr.
44

“By the time Jules reaches the Black Cottage, she is too exhausted to be cautious.”(235)

She had such a long journey that she no longer cared about things her fully awake body would.
45

“Jules jerks awake in an unfamiliar bed.”(237)

I can relate to this because whenever I sleep anywhere other than my own bed, I can’t sleep.
46

“It is improper for her to recline, with Billy seated beside her feet.”(243)

As queens their etiquette standards were very high and rules had to be followed.
47

“He meant to use her as a distraction from his grief, and she is failing him.”(243)

I can relate to this situation because Arsinoe was having a hard time being what her friend needed during his loss of a close friend.
48

“Mirabella feels the whisper of robes at her shoulder, and Luca’s calm voice cuts through the noise.”(247)

I like how they used personification to describe to soft bristle of a robe next to Mirabella.
49

“She smiles weakly and blinks against the brightness, every muscle in her body groaning and stiff.”(259)

This quote uses personification to describe how Arsinoe’s muscles feel.
50

“Her mouth tastes terrible. Like old blood.”(259)

While this is kind of a gross quote, It puts you in Arsinoe’s shoes after waking up from a near death experience.
