Internship Terms and Conditions

EMPLOYER/TRAINING AGENCY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The employer/training site will adhere to all State and Federal regulations regarding safe working environment and conditions, employment, child labor laws, minimum wages, and workers’ compensation.

  1. The student learner will be given a variety of work assignments and be supervised by an experienced person.
  2. The employer agrees to notify the Coordinator of any problems with the student intern such as absenteeism, poor work, accidents, or serious illness at work.
  3. Periodic evaluation of job progress will be made by the training supervisor on a rating form provided by the school.
  4. The training supervisor will arrange a conference with the coordinator when a trainee problem arises.
  5. The training sponsor will provide necessary safety instruction throughout the student learner training period.
  6. The employer/training site will not employ a student learner to displace a regular worker.
  7. Exposure to the hazardous work will be incidental to the student’s training and that any such work will be intermittent and under the direct supervision of an experienced, qualified person.
  8. The employer is not liable to the unemployment compensation fund for wages paid to the student learner while under the training program. This is provided in Section 4(l) (4) (10) (C) of the Pennsylvania Unemployment Compensation Law.

STUDENT LEARNER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. The intern should be at their internship for a minimum of 400 minutes (6 hours and 40 minutes) each week.
  2. The student and parents are responsible for transportation between the school and the employment site.
  3. The student learner must continue to complete satisfactory work at school and earn passing grades in all assigned classes.
  4. The student learner must be regular in his/her attendance at the school and internship.
  5. Students are required to be at school by 7:32 AM each day unless there is an excused absence.
  6. The student learner agrees to report job problems to the training supervisor and cooperative education coordinator.
  7. The student learner shall call the employer and school in the early morning any day when unable to report to work and/or school.

Students who do not attend school are not permitted to attend their internship that day. In the event of students not attending school, the Cooperative Education Teacher will contact the employer on the day of the student’s absence to notify the employer.

  1. For the first incidence of not attending school but attending work, students will receive a verbal warning/ reminder of these regulations.
  2. For the second incidence of not attending school but attending work, students will receive a written warning/ reminder of these regulations and one day of ISS.
  3. The third incidence of not attending school but attending an internship will result in a meeting with an administrative team and may result in removal from the internship program. 
  4. The student learner is expected to follow GSHS rules concerning insurance.
  5. The student learner agrees to perform the assigned duties in a loyal manner and work to the best interest of all concerned.
  6. All interns should conform to the dress code of the other employees at their intern placement.
  7. The student learner may not leave their internship until after the end of the school semester unless terminated by the mentor.
  8. The student learner will adhere to company policy; employment may be terminated for the same reasons as regular employees.
  9. The student learner must be regular in attendance at school and on the job. If unable to report to work, the student learner will notify the employer and coordinator before the start of the normal workday.
  10. The student learner’s internship will be terminated upon withdrawal from school.
  11. The student learner will participate in designated meetings and related instruction.
  12. The student learner will follow school rules at the work and school sites. Violation of school rules will lead to disciplinary action, which may include termination from employment.

SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. The program is under the direct supervision of a professionally trained staff member.
  2. The student learner will receive job preparation (including safety insurance).
  3. The cooperative education coordinator will visit the student learner and training supervisor at the training site.
  4. The cooperative education coordinator will investigate the compatibility of job circumstances with requirements for student learner attainment of advanced standing in an apprenticeship program upon graduation from high school.
  5. The school will maintain signed copies of the written training agreement and plan for each student learner participating in the program for three years from the date of enrollment in the program.
  6. Student learner transportation, insurance, and attendance at school and work will be covered by school policy.
