Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Tanner Laukhuff – Accounting Internship

Hi, my name is Tanner Laukhuff, and I am currently a senior at Garden Spot High School. Thanks to the help of Jill Hackman, the career pathways coordinator at Garden Spot, I was able to land an internship at Garden Spot Village in their financial department. Garden Spot Village is a retirement community located in New Holland, PA. I have already learned so much about the business world and running the finances of a company from my mentor, Nate Weber. I also spend a lot of time working with Ginger Beiler in the accounts receivable department and Heather Mellinger, who works in accounts payable and is the payroll supervisor. I enrolled in this internship because I wanted to learn about a math-related job field and solidify my choice for a future career.

My time at Garden Spot Village has led me to many new opportunities to help the day-to-day processes go smoothly. I have entered deposits into cash receipts, prepared invoices for payment and validated them for usage, and helped a check run-through. In the future, I will be sitting in on budget meetings and preparing billing statements to send to residents. These tasks have taught me so much about how the inner workings of a business run and prepared me for a job when I am no longer a student. I have been lucky to work with a new friendly face every week. Each person I worked with has had so much helpful information, and they have helped me in more than just my internship. They are all so excited for you to be taking the opportunity to have an internship, and they are excited about your future as well. They have given me so much advice when it comes to college and finding a job afterward.

My internship has already put me on a great path for my future career and set me up for success. I came into my internship with a specific field in mind that differs a little from accounting. This experience has taught me so much about the finance world, and that knowledge will be invaluable in the future. It already sets me apart on my resume, and it will also help me know how many of the processes work. There are going to be some differences if I end up going into the field I am planning on, but I will already have more experience and knowledge than most other people looking for the same job. I have learned so many useful things like how to work effectively and efficiently, and how to appropriately carry myself and act while in an office. This experience has solidified my thoughts on the career path that I want to go down.

Luckily, my time at Garden Spot Village is not yet over. I have already been given information and experiences that will prove to be invaluable in the future. I have valued all the time that I have put into working with others. They have given me so much advice about my future and the future of my career. I am very excited to continue working with everyone there, and I can not wait for everything else I have to learn. If you are considering getting an internship, I would highly recommend it. The hands-on experience is not like a classroom, and it is so much more beneficial to you.
