Lauren Horning – Athletic Training Internship

My name is Lauren Horning, and I am a senior at Garden Spot High School. This first semester I have had the opportunity to intern in the Garden Spot Athletic Training department. My mentor is Michelle Chamberlain, the Athletic Trainer, and Assistant Athletic Director.

This internship is a great opportunity to look into the depths of Athletic Training. Many people only see the parts where the Trainers are helping athletes, but there are much more behind the scenes aspects not everyone sees. This includes pregame prep: washing, drying, and preparing water bottles, filling the water jugs, setting up the outside table and essentials for the football game, and cleaning up everything at the end of the night as well.

This experience has really opened my eyes to the kindness and challenges an Athletic Trainer has to face. Any job that involves dealing with other people can be a challenge, but this experience especially has taught me to be patient. I am super excited to further my education in this field.

This internship really showed me what to expect in the everyday life of an Athletic Trainer. Going into this internship I had an idea that I wanted to become an Athletic Trainer and after spending time being in the Athletic Training atmosphere I would love to become one. This experience has taught me kindness, patience, and the ability to overcome any challenge.
