Garden Spot High School

Lucy Stern – Business & Marketing Internship

Hello, I am Lucy Stern, and I am a senior at Garden Spot High School. My internship is at Garden Spot Fire Rescue in New Holland, and it is for marketing. My mentor is Nick Good, and he is the Director of Administration and Public Information Officer at GSFR. In college I will be studying marketing, and my internship is giving me great experience of what happens in the business world.

I help with a lot of different things at my internship, and I almost never end up doing the same thing each day. Some of the things I work on are scheduling/ creating social media posts to get sent out, organizing files and information digitally using excel or into folders, updating the fire company’s website, and preparing things to get sent out in the mail. Since I never really know what my task will be for the day, it teaches me to be flexible. While shadowing my mentor, I learned that flexibility is really important in the business world and being able to adapt to changes is a valuable trait to have.

I have a few projects I started working on at my internship. Pretty much every week I create social media posts for Instagram and Facebook for the fire company, and I schedule them out to be posted at the same time on the same day. The posts I make are for many different things, from future events to fire safety tips/ infographics. I have also helped plan for the upcoming cadet fire camp being held at the fire hall this summer. I made plenty of social media posts promoting the event, and I made a poster that is being sent out to the elementary schools. Another big project I started was organizing firefighter’s certificates into folders. Each firefighter has a collection of certificates they earned by taking classes over the years, so I spent lots of time organizing those files into categories and by the year they were awarded.

I am very grateful for the experience I am getting during my time at my internship. I feel confident that I will be able to take what I learned here into my future career in and after college. After spending time working with social media and creating content, I am excited to get into the marketing industry to hopefully use those skills in my future job. I would recommend this internship to anyone interested in any business career. There is a lot to learn about what businesses deal with on a day-to-day basis, and it is a very good way to get experience before heading to college!
