Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Bryna Kelly – Interior Design Internship

My internship is at Indoor City in Lancaster. I extended my internship, so I am in my second semester there. I have worked more of the learning aspect to applying the knowledge I have learned to help around the showroom and with the sales half which I usually work on with my mentor Miranda. I am excited to be learning so much before going into college and pursuing it as my career.

What I do every day is always different, and changes based on the season. On Fridays when there are fewer people working, I will help out with the customers that come into the store. On the less busy days or when there are more people working that day, I will help Kim with the tasks that she needs to get done. They are usually putting stickers on new boards, taking inventory of products, or sometimes setting up a display. My favorite thing to do is set up vignettes around the showroom. I like to set them up because they get to show some products people might not have considered in the first place or give them an idea if they do not know where to start.

During the winter months, the traffic in and out of the showroom starts to slow down but now that it is getting warmer out it is starting to pick back up again. With more people coming in and out there are more quotes that need to be done and emailed out. With that, there are also install dates constantly being updated or having to be scheduled/adjusted. With extending my internship I got to see projects from start to finish. The house we had been working on the first semester that I had included in my first blog post had everything installed and is about to be wrapped up. I got to see the process almost the whole way through including installs that maybe the customer had changed their mind on after seeing it in their home.

Getting to stay for two semesters helped grow my knowledge more and allow me to further understand the job. I am able to see a project in all stages rather than just the beginning or end like I would if I were only there for one semester. The experience I have gained has made me more confident in my career path and makes me more excited to learn more through the rest of the year and in college.
