Will Fithian – Journalism Internship

Hi, my name is William Fithian, and I am an editorial intern at Engle Printing and Publishing Co. (EPC), which is located in Hempfield. I love writing and I wish to continue my passion for journalism in college. At EPC, I experiment with a lot of different skills in print journalism. The main task I have been practicing is copy-editing, which is editing press releases to make sure they are print-worthy. Other tasks they have me do is research for writers, proof-reading, helping with interviews, and some clerical work that is needed for events. I was extremely excited when this internship was offered to me, it harnesses the skills for all types of journalism.

One of the most exciting projects I have worked on is planning EPC’s Where and When Pennsylvania Family Travel Fair (PAFTF). Until the middle of April, I will be assisting in the planning process for the PAFTF. For background, the Where and When publication hosts a fair every year for visitor bureaus and Pennsylvanian attractions/exhibits to share their events. I really enjoyed seeing how it all came together, and I cannot wait to attend. Although, my time at EPC was not just planning events. I got to work one on one with journalists, editors, and so many more amazing people. I not only learned the necessary skills needed for the printing business, but for the journalism world in general.

This internship has helped me grow so much. Not just in my writing, but in the professional world as well. Even though I want to go into broadcast journalism, I now know the basics of journalism from this internship. There is only so much you can learn inside of a classroom, some of it must be in the field. This internship strengthened my knowledge of the world of writing and my passion for this career. I could not have asked for a better internship to kick off my journalism path in the future. I will take many life lessons from this internship and more knowledge of the basics of journalism.

This internship introduced me to a wide range of opportunities, and I cannot be more excited to see where it takes me in the future. I learned there is a lot more to journalism than just writing. I now know all the fields I can potentially go into, and still pursue my dream in the journalism world. EPC furthered my passion for writing and news reporting. I cannot be more thankful for the opportunities they present me. I wish to take my knowledge from EPC to the future, so I can pursue my broadcasting dream.
