Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Julia Ellsworth – Accounting Internship

Hi, my name is Julia Ellsworth, and I am a senior at Garden Spot High School. Currently, I am an intern within the financial department at Garden Spot Village, a retirement facility in New Holland, PA. I gain insight and guidance from my two mentors Dale Beiler and Nate Weber. Besides my two mentors, I acquire a large portion of my knowledge from Heather Mellinger, an Accounts Payable and Payroll Supervisor, and Ginger Beiler, an Accounts Receivable Clerk. I decided to enroll in an internship to learn more about accounting and to solidify my choices for my desired future career path.

During my time at Garden Spot Village, I am provided multiple opportunities to help with daily activities around the office. So far, I have been able to sit in on budget meetings, send billing statements to residents, enter deposits into cash receipts journals, organize invoices and code them to specific departments, and overall observe the inner workings of a business. There are many more operations that I help with, but the ones listed are the most common. I also tend to bounce around a lot between people, thus, I gain different perspectives on how money transfers from area to area. So far, I’ve had an amazing experience at my internship. Everyone who I work and interact with is very kind, and I especially appreciate the flexibility of my mentors went it comes to changes in my schedule for school and such.

From the experience of this hands-on learning, I have gained a lot of insight into this career path and self-reflection on what I possibly want to pursue in the future. Some of the insight I have gained is on the etiquette of the workplace and observed what a productive and efficient working atmosphere should look like. By being involved in different aspects of the financial department, I have been able to lean towards what type of specific work I would hope to do in the future. This internship has brought me several steps forward in making me more confident in the future aspirations of my preferred career path. I am still growing as a person and I still have a lot more I need to learn, but I am becoming more and more prepared for my future in college, and after college, every day.

Although I have not concluded my time at Garden Spot Village yet, this internship has given me countless experiences to open my eyes to my future career. I have thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated my time and all the things I have learned throughout this journey. I have learned multiple things about the career and about myself along the way, and there is no doubt in my mind that I will continue to learn more valuable knowledge about this profession. I hope to continue this line of work in my future, and I highly suggest an internship to anyone who might be interested in pursuing an internship because it brings to light the true inner workings of a profession.
