Emma Burger – Journalism Internship

My name is Emma Burger and I am an intern at Garden Spot Village for the Marketing department. Garden Spot Village is a retirement community located in New Holland, PA for ages 55 and up. I work in the marketing department alongside the creative team consisting of a digital storyteller, graphic designer, and storyteller.

I work three times a week for two hours each day. I do a variety of tasks, but my favorite is interviewing residents for blog post articles. In the interview process, I will ask the resident questions about their experience, take notes based on their responses, and use those notes to create an article showcasing their experiences. These will be published on the Garden Spot Village Blog as either a single story or a series of stories. My most recent blog series has been about depicting the experiences of the residents that had recently gone on a missions trip to Kenya through GSV. Other than writing articles for the blog, I help with PR for upcoming events at GSV, editing articles, proofreading podcast transcripts, and so much more.

I have had a passion for writing since I was little. I have always loved reading and writing, so I knew this would be a great internship for me. It also allows me to connect with people on a personal level and share stories that would have otherwise been untold. Being in an environment where I’m surrounded by people that are amazing at their job and willing to teach me has been extremely beneficial. Along with the experience and knowledge that I am getting, I am also building a professional portfolio and learning to write a variety of different people-centric pieces, from spotlight articles to PR articles for an event.

This experience has led me to realize how much I love connecting with people and helping them. Even if it is just through telling their story, making someone feel heard and helping them is absolutely something I would love to do in a future profession. I am so glad that I have had this experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to pursue a degree in anything writing-related or anyone that just loves to write and connect with people.
