Nina Nguyen – Secondary Education Internship

Hi, my name is Nina Nguyen, and I am an intern at Garden Spot Middle School of the ELANCO school district. I am working with Mrs. Trovinger 7^th grade language art classes. I decided to do this internship for several reasons. One of the reasons being I wanted to be certain of my career choice so I would to college for the right thing. Another reason is I wanted to explore this education career more and gain more knowledge of what it’s like to be a teacher. Lastly, I wasn’t sure which level of education I was interested in this internship helped to better understand what a secondary teacher does.

Throughout my internship, I have done a couple of different tasks. Some of my daily tasks include taking attendance, monitoring student work, helping to answer questions, organizing papers for my mentor, and many more. Most of my tasks were interacting with students by but I also got a few separate assignments from my mentor. The independent assignments would include printing/copying papers, grading assignments for each class, and even leading a small and short activity. Even though these tasks are simple I have learned a few important lessons from them.

The experience I have gained from this internship has helped me to learn a lot and do some self-reflection. As I continue to learn more about this career, I feel more prepared for when I enter college. Some self-reflection I did was realizing and learning that this career will be difficult for me to pursue because it has a lot of difficulties specifically growing out of my comfort zone. However, this experience in my internship that I have gained by leading small activities helped me to realize that I will get better and grow.  Lastly, I strongly believe that as I continue within my internship, I will continue to learn a lot more.

Overall, this internship has provided me with so much new knowledge, experience, and a new perspective of teaching as well. There is so much more than more for me to learn and before this internship I didn’t realize how much I was missing out on. My internship will continue to help me with my final decisions and help me to make better decisions for after high school.
