Angelina Sweigart – Dental Internship

Hi! My name is Angelina Sweigart and I am a senior here at Garden Spot High School. I am currently an intern at Smilebuilderz in Lancaster with my mentor Chase Elliot for the fall semester. I attend my internship five days a week for three hours each day. At Smilebuilderz, I am an intern in the billing department which manages the insurance billing of our patients.

My job at Smilebuilderz is mainly to check an insurance claim status or to resubmit a claim. This is important so that we can get the payments as soon as possible so we can stay on track of new claims. Another task in the billing office is calling a patient to update them on their claim or notify them about their account balance. During my time in the billing office, I have learned the association of procedures and x-rays which has helped gain knowledge for my future in the dental field. I have also had the experience to talk to patients which will be helpful as a dental assistant since they are with patients for most of their time in the clinic.

I am currently working on a project called check takebacks. A check takeback is when the insurance company takes back a payment they made because of a problem. So, my job is to find out why the insurance has not paid or taken back a payment for a list of patients.

My internship at Smilebuilderz has been a wonderful experience. I have gained so much knowledge about billing and dental. I have learned the codes for many dental procedures and the differences between x-rays. This opportunity has influenced my goal of going into the dental field and becoming a dental assistant. Next spring, I will be joining the dental assisting program at Smilebuilderz to continue my career there in which this internship has prepared me for.
