Pathways to Success

Garden Spot High School

Bryna Kelly – Interior Design Internship

My internship is at Indoor City in Lancaster typically at their showroom location but occasionally the granite yard. My mentor Miranda is a designer and is involved with sales. I have been working with her to get some more experience in the interior design business before going to college and pursuing it as a career in the future.

The day-to-day routine is always different. Sometimes there are customers that have appointments scheduled and other times there are people walking in for the first time or customers coming in to quickly drop off some samples or stay for an hour talking about what they are working on. On top of that the phone will go off with customers who have questions or people checking in on a product. There are also often sales reps in and out the door stocking new products, taking discontinued ones or just bringing us lunch. Some of my job duties include, setting up vignettes around the showroom, helping write quotes, returning samples, helping customers pick out/find a certain tile, and creating designs for the new boards going in.

There are always on-going projects. Traffic in and us of the showroom tends to slow down during this time of the year simply because people do not want to spend extra money around the holidays. One of the projects I am helping out with right now is designing a whole house with 2,000+ square feet. On the smaller end we are also working on a few runners or stairs. I am also working on projects in the showroom. We have what we call display boards with different tiles, hardwood, etc. I have been designing a few different boards that will be installed in the future to take place of the boards with discontinued/outdated products.

Through my internship I have learned a lor about the different styles everyone has and that everyone has a different opinion. I have learned a lot by working with people who may want things that are not feasible, like putting marble in a fridge drawer, or working with people who have no idea what they want. The experience I have had has helped solidify my decision and makes me even more excited to pursue a career in interior design.
